One of my online friends has a 14 year old daughter who is about go on a school trip from the UK to Prague. She is worried about her daughter's safety. I know nothing about Prague...I was just hoping some of my friends here could let me know what kind of city Prague is...would you send your daughter there?
I spent a few months there back in 1995. Quite honestly, it's my most favourite city in the world. Totally safe. Mind you, I was 24 at that time. I'd feel fine about a 14 year old going there, as long as she was chaperoned. I mean, realistically, a 14 year old shouldn't be going anywhere alone.... Damn. Why did I ever leave that city...?
No major European city is safe. No city anywhere is safe. The UK isn't quite safe to start with, so there probably isn't much difference, between the two.
Ah it's like any other city, pickpockets, theives, rape, arson, murder.... Sorry wrong anecdote. Seriously though, if she can survive in the UK then she'll be fine. Safe and sensible and any city is fine. Tell her to take a phrase book and learn some of it, rather than looking like a tourist. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Yes, for European standards Prague is safe. You'd have to walk alone, 1 AM somewhere in some creepy place to have something happen to you.. The Czech Republic is actually super safe, I'd say. Well, since I live here.. Prague is a pretty city, with lots of things that shouldn't be missed out on. I don't know why so many people talk about the Czech Republic as if it was some Sudan where you have to fear that some commie pirates kidnap your ass, and cut you into pieces. Since they're most definitely going on a tourist trip, and won't be visiting dubious corners late at night, I would say, there's nothing to be worried about. But hey, on every trip something could happen, whether you go to a little village, or to a huge city. It's a matter of luck. Anyway, I'd send my daughter, my son, anyone I know to Prague without further worries. But I wouldn't send my 14 year old daughter to Zurich, London, and so on.
Lovely city, I'd go back anytime. I once had a bag of shopping (birthday gifts for a friend) stolen from me, but, on reflection putting a large brightly-coloured carrier bag on the ground behind me while I took photographs of night scenes in the middle of a crowded Wenceslas Square wasn't the smartest thing to do. Thanks for all the replies! I just didn't know if it was like Detroit or something. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I'll let her know.
You have to remember that us Europeans only discovered fire last month and only got the hang of the wheel a couple of weeks ago, so please excuse the lack of anything resembling civilisation.
