By your weight and overall health. If you are far below your weight for your height then you need to eat more. If your health is poor all the time you also could need a better diet.

There are many missing variables to this, for instance you might be age 16+ where a parent might assume that you can perhaps fend for yourself by getting a job of some sort to pay your own way.

You might be the type of person that just lounges about and idles rather than chasing up a job, or finding some way forward which they might disagree with.

Funnily enough Food happens to be the oldest currency in the world, as people would either have the choice to work or starve.

As for how much you are eating, well there is usually the dietitianary information on food sources that identifies how many calories are recommended per day. (This varies between men and women and of course children)

If you are having fainting spells or find it hard to concentrate on things then the absence of food can be to blame.

If you go to a site like http://thecaloriecounter.com and add up the number of calories you consume in a day, what do you get?

What's your bodyweight? Sex? Level of physical activity on an average day? These factors will all determine what your body's caloric need is.

People can still be a normal-seeming weight and be malnourished. More definitive testing would be to draw blood and look at your albumin, prealbumin, total protein, transferrin, RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit.

If you have to ask...you probably aren't eating enough...makes me sad a fellow member is going hungry. If you're ever in Texas..come by my house..I'll feed the fuck out of you...and send you home with a care package. :)

Not necessarily. I'm technically underweight but only because I'm built like a baby bird.

when you're too hungry.

when you're feeling fatigue without the aid of stimulants like caffeine.

hunger is only good for telling you when you need to eat. eat something nutritious, not convenience foods (which are generally more expensive than healthy food). and eat until you're not hungry anymore.

snack on nuts, like almonds. they're a great protein source, and a good source of healthy fat. they're easy to carry around if you're on the go, and you can buy them just about anywhere.

I was joking Lori...It's just that you sounded like an infomercial for nuts.

I'm not even gonna ask what special sauce is...I'm sure I don't wanna know.

well i do like nuts, and infomercials.

the special sauce is on the big mac. don't you remember the commercial? you don't know the big mac song?

that is a little out-dated. today's problem is with the ranch dressing. i don't know what in the hell hidden valley is hiding, but it's definitely something mind-numbing and addictive. and it needs to stop.

Whats hidden, is most likely all the preservatives they use in that stuff..

Yes, I remember the Big Mac song...I think every body sang that song as a kid.

I guess I have a dirty mind..When you put special sauce in quotation marks, it just made me think of something else. Never mind..:)

I prefer Carls Jr. over McD's or BK..Just tastes better...Though McD's has great fries.

Never had Carls Jr.

One thing i liked was the mcDLT but that hasn't been made since i was around 12 years old and they actuallty stopped making it because the packaging was not environmentally friendly. The fries are good but i love fries wtih a lot of salt and supposedly with the combination of the oil and salt is not good...but it does taste good. In some ways i overcompensate for certain things for the mere fact that i am a smoker. Though now i roll my own cigarettes and cut down significantly. ...sigh, but it has been a tough road to hoe.

i see. my "special sauce" is free of any preservatives or unnatural ingredients, but may be addictive, because of it's purity, and natural mood enhancers. ;)

BUT THE RANCH DRESSING!...there's got to be crack in that shit. i know. i used to be a waitress in a place very much like shennanigan's (from the movie "waiting"). i swear to you, that people will eat that shit, drink that shit, on anything and everything. they don't even care what the hell they're eating it on, as long as whatever it is, is drenched in ranch.

i spent soooooooo much of my time running for "extra ranch", that i wanted to add a button to my "flair" that read "i got your extra ranch right here", but my boss wouldn't let me.

i had enough of it one night, and decided to be a smart ass and make fun of some guy who asked for extra extra extra ranch dressing, so i brought him a soup bowl of ranch dressing with a soup spoon in it. i was fully prepared to lose my job that night for insulting a customer, and to my surprise and dismay, the guy looked at me like i was mother theresa, and thanked me whole-heartedly. i thought he was going to cry he was so pleased.

people would drink that shit through a straw. it's fucking disgusting. i can't even look at it now.

Gremmie
11-08-10, 11:18 PM
Yeah, there must be some additive to the stuff...

I use it on almost everything...That is, except on salad..Go figure..

I use it instead of mayo on sandwiches or burgers.. I use the stuff on fries even.

So, you may be right, may have crack in it...lol

it's a non-delicious combination of fat, sugar, and chemicals. imagine it's stains all over the front of my waitress uniform and not being able to wash off the smell of it. imagine my dog licking it off my shoes when i come home from work. imagine all of those waddling obese asses that i had to navigate around to RUN extra ranch dressing to my tables.

shit, go to work at an applebee's restaurant, and you'll never look at that stuff the same way again.

ugh.

think of the stains on my shirt, and how it must smell. that shirt is straight out of the laundry btw...

well, i do believe that my disdain for the ranch does effect change on some level. my thoughts and desires do emanate throughout the universe and affect everything. so if the ranch "goes away", along with a lot of other nasty things, you can thank me later.

Smoking must be the hardest habit to kick..I haven't had a smoke in over 2 years, and still get a craving now and then...Especially if I have a beer.

Smoking must be the hardest habit to kick..I haven't had a smoke in over 2 years, and still get a craving now and then...Especially if I have a beer.

i quit for 4 years, after smoking a pack a day for 20 years, and it was a flippin' miracle. when you hear me talking about some crazy spiritual shit i went through about 5 years ago, that was the miracle. and me quitting was a side-effect. i didn't even have any withdrawal whatsoever. it was the strangest thing.

then i went to new orleans and drank for about 16 hours straight...............

don't make the mistake of thinking you can go back to it "casually". i knew i wasn't "casual" about anything.

Gremmie
11-09-10, 12:27 AM
No, I know better...I quit once before, for almost 3 years...Then had ONE smoke, and smoked another 5 years... Been just over 2 years, since my last smoke... No such thing as "casual" smoking to me...All or nothing.

me too...all or nothing. i'm envious. i LOVED not smoking. it was like being let out of jail, or having a ball and chain cut off at least.

i have two small meals in a day and that includes breakfast, my parents dont really feed me, how do i know that too little is too little? As others have told you, there is one foolproof way to determine whether you're eating enough: Are you maintaining your weight? If you are losing weight, then you're not eating enough. It's that simple. Unless you're fat, you do not want to lose weight.

Of course you have to own a scale in order to acquire this information. If you don't have one, go out and buy one right now. They're not expensive. Every household should have one, it's as important as a vacuum cleaner.

Now if you are living with your parents, that could be because you are not yet an adult. Younger people are still growing, so maintaining their weight isn't good enough. They're supposed to be gaining weight. If you're in school there should be a nurse or a P.E. teacher who has the charts to tell you how much weight a person of your age and stature should gain every year. Otherwise just use the internet. This is popular, important information so it will not be difficult to find.
having a busy life doesnt give me much time to remember when to eat and kinda find myself starving at the end of the day. I was thinking whether 2 meals is average on a daily basis or if I should be eating moreYou must live a sheltered life if you're not familiar with the common wisdom that everyone eats three meals a day. Even people on diets eat three meals, or even more often, because that helps them feel full so they don't run out and eat something naughty.

If you can adjust your habits so you eat breakfast, lunch and supper (either lunch or supper can be "dinner" if you make it your biggest meal--today most Americans eat their big meal at night but 100 years ago when they all did physical labor it was in mid-day), like virtually all other human beings in the Western world, you'll probably feel better and you'll probably no longer have to worry about your weight.

If it's hard for you to become interested in food then you need to figure out why and fix it. That is not normal and it is not healthy. Everything in your whole life depends on getting adequate nutrition. If you're undereating and your weight is far below normal, you will find yourself getting sick too often, you'll be depressed, you won't have any muscle strength, even your intelligence and attention span will suffer.

Just start eating three meals like everybody else. That will probably come pretty close to solving your problem.

This is not just a minor problem that you can ignore until you feel like working on it. This can ruin your life. I have a friend who is 5'5" tall and weighs only 90 lb. (1.65m, 41kg) She looks like a refugee from Auschwitz. No subcutaneous fat, her features are all sharp and bony, her arms and legs are so thin you're afraid if she falls down they'll all snap in half. Some days she doesn't eat at all. She insists that she gets enough vitamins and minerals because she takes supplements, but she doesn't understand that her body can't metabolize those things without some food. In particular, there are several fat-soluble vitamins that just pass right through her system like sawdust. Her health is terrible. She's always sick, she's always weak, she's always depressed, and she's always canceling things with her friends because she just can't muster up enough energy and enthusiasm to get out of the house.

She started out weighing about 110 lb (50kg), which is okay for her size--she's definitely not a big gal. But she just kept not eating enough for several years, and now, at age 52, it's a big problem. I'm 67 but I know it will be I who bury her, not vice versa.

Please don't let this happen to you. If all else fails, go see a doctor!
