Often I have heard persons state that human potential is significant and that we are only using such a small portion of what we may eventually be capable of.
    Care to discuss...

    Which people?
    Can you give an example?

    Potential for what?

Until we know what was meant by whoever said it how can we know whether we're using a small or large portion of whatever it is?

It strikes me as a the sort of wishy-washy tra-la-la let's all love the flowers and hug the trees type comment by someone who thinks we "ought to be doing [whatever]" but can't actually justify the statement...

Either that or it's a meaningless phrase implying that we (probably) don't have limits (or, more likely, we haven't got a clue as to where those limits are) on what we could do as a specie.

No, I find that "potential" is fulfilled more often than I'd like.

Only 10,000? Pfft. I'm more than 3/4 of the way 20,000 (counting my previous incarnation).

Seriously though, where have you come across this claim, since the only times I've ever heard anything even close was as per my scathing dismissal in the example above...

Humans potential to survive has the factors amount, time, outer effects & lifelength.

Judging by that I'd say that human potential to survive is great. It is possible that it will lessen due to space being such a dangerous place to be in.

No, definitely more often. I prefer a quiet life.

Not as many as I could have.

    Einstein's cerebral usage?
I know about savantism. (And that's a swings and roundabouts thing: in other words it may not be a potential for everyone unless they lose some other aspect of intelligence/ personality whatever you want to call it).

    Envy? Hardly.

may be you should try more often and fulfill and grow a little bit of that potential you got hidden somewhere, although......

It doesn't have to be although demonstrable genius can provoke terrible intolerances such as envy etc etc....
the movie Good Will Hunting was a good one to look at
also My Beautiful Mind concerning John Nash(*?) and his Nobel.

oh and even Brave Heart for an example of both extremes regarding Honor and courage and abeit foolishness.

the list just goes on and on....

Quiet night? It's 1:30 in the afternoon!

Nah. By the time I've formulated my post I've got the answer...

I know, I've been the victim of such more than once.

And again. (The honour, that is not the foolishness. Although...)

But are these "potentials" or merely traits that manifest themselves to a greater extent in certain people only? I.e. are we all capable of that much sense of honour (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon springs to mind...) or do we each have a "certain amount" only. E.g. the way not all of us are capable of winning the Olympics regardless of training.

Who says we have to maintain a "Humanoid form", we might well endeavour to get to a point where form is unnecessary generating just a state of consciousness completely non-corporeal, existing only as an entity within a ether framework. (Ether in this instance being similar to that of the Ethernet, a software level network that exists within the hardware composition of the network, with no form or boundaries as there is always the future of expandability by both an increase in the equipment and technology level over time.)

In fact that explanation actually tips my proverbial Iceberg of reasoning, since I reason that all of the world that you see before you exists within an ether framework, not the ether that some had a holy grail in physics but a development platform that we have yet to understand and actively subvert to our will as protagonists.

    Nah, common error.
People assume I don't give the topic any thought simply because I generally don't hand hold them through the steps I take to get to my response.
My reply ties in with with those I gave in this thread, on intelligence.

    Again, what potential?

I have a low tolerance for motivational speakers, too. In fact the last one I came across told me she hated me within an hour of meeting.

In other words they're (nearly all) wishy-washy homilies to make people feel good. No specifics. No data. No context.

For crying out loud, look at the site where they came from:
    New age bull.
    Riight.
