Not to mention they don't share a border to make this possible. I would say the it more complex then the US "tolerating" Israeli settlements, certainly the present administration has expressed dislike for the settlements but with the power of the pro-Israel side of American politics is very difficult to made a harsh stance against Israel without being very politically risky.
Hello, but the US and Israel have an ongoing disagreement over Jerusalem. The government of Israel deeply resents the idea of a divided Jerusalem. However, the US would prefer if the government of Israel would cede parts of Jerusalem that the Palestinians want to have as their capital because we are kind of tired of Tehran and others making everyone angry and nervous. If the US sides against Tehran in favor of Israel, everyone besides Israel says the US is evil, and Israel is really nasty about having to ask for help. If the US government sides with Tehran against the interests of Israel, then everyone hates the US because they all think the US is in-bed with terrorists. If the US tries to play peace-maker with them, everyone hates the US because the US is meddling. If the US stays uninvolved, then whoever eventually wins will eventually come over and attack the US because they want to expand their empire, which is what happened the last time the US tried the hands-off strategy. Therefore, the US insists on being involved in one way or the other because we don't trust you loonies. There are some political factions in Jerusalem that are willing to negotiate with the Palestinians over some territories, and there are others that take a hardline Zionist stance. And there you go!
What difference does that make? The US, Poland and Russia are also different countries from Palestine, but that hasn't stopped Americans, Poles or Russians from building settlements there.
