Looking at remarks on Download.com, it seems that not all antivirus programs and firewalls are made equal. I was, in my infinite ignorance, about the wisdom/effectiveness of putting multiple antivirus programs on a computer.

Well, I guess if you wanted to put on multiple ones you could. I find it easier to just be aware of what you're downloading off of the internet and off of your emails. It's pretty easy to spot a virus in an email or on a webpage (what kind of file it is, how the webpage looks).

What I was refering to was any technical difficulties(like Linux and Windows), would they have a cow about each other?

That's a given, but it won't protect you from everything, which is why people use the virus scanners and firewalls.

If you run both antivirus programs on at the same time I am sure there would be some conflict. What you might want to do is have on running constantly, then every week or so take it down and do a quick scan with the other one.

    Multiple antivirus?

I think you can install them without problem.

But you should never try to switch on the background antivirus-protections of more than one product, at the same time. This leads sooner or later to a windows crash and you will need to start windows in protected mode, to get rid of that, again.

So, you should have deactivated all background guards existing on your PC, while you install a new antivirus.
Because all antivirus softwares activate their background guard by default, upon install.

Thanks for clarifying that zira. Next time I will be more careful to read over my posts to make sure they can actually be read.

Would it be possible to tell the programs to scan at different times, say one in the evening and one in the morning? I didn't know they had a background thing.

Yeah you sure could, with some sort of task schedular. Norton has it built in to schedule scans. If your certain virus scans can't try messing around with microsoft task schedular. It would do the job but I'm not sure what kind of paramters you would have to use to get them to scan automatically.

It's perfectly OK to have two installed at the same time, but do NOT have both of them use real time scanning at the same time. This will cause conflicts. I would suggest you set one for real time scanning, and use the other as a backup for anything the other might miss.
