a "stupid tax" for stupid people

Discussion in 'Politics' started by WildBlueYonder, Sep 9, 2005.

  1. the older I get, the more I believe we should have a "stupid tax", you want to go rock-climbing in Yosemite or hiking on Mt. Hood, pay an insurance premium that will cover your death, rescue attempts, or hospitalizations, etc...

you smoke cigs, pay "stupid taxes"

    you're overweight, more "stupid taxes"

you like to drink & drive, more "stupid taxes"

you want to do 'extreme sports', like the Baja bike-run I saw on cable last weekend, more "stupid taxes"

you want to ski pure virgin snow off a helicopter in Alaska or the Grand Tetons, more "stupid taxes"

you want to live in some primo local, say Malibu or some hilltop prone to wildfires or mudslides, more "stupid taxes"

everyone that lived in, visited or partied in NO, should have paid a "stupid tax" for that city

we pay for everyones mistakes in state, fed taxes, higher insurance premiums, etc...

those that take the risks, should pay up for themselves, they take the risks of their own accord, they should pay the price, for their fun

Well here in the UK we have a Tax on stupidity itself.

    It's called the national lottery.
The more stupid you are the more tickets you buy.
    It works really well.

    heh, good one DeeCee.

anyway, I agree with you WildBlueYonder I have been telling people this for a while. I didn't put in the part about climbing/skiing/ect, but i think that if you do anything that makes you more likely to need medical attention (smoke/fat/out-of-shape/ect) the higher premiums you should pay. it would be financial incentive for people to keep in shape.

  7. I was watching a segment of the Gravity Games on TV, they interviewed some dude (a spectator), who was saying that he had broken his elbow before & they showed this bone nub (it had healed wrong) sticking out about 2 or 3 inches, it looked bad, he laughed it off as no big deal

just another guy that should pay the "stupid tax"

    I'll tell you what...
The day they start offering decent national free healthcare, I will vote YES on the stupid tax referendum.

Nah. Make them buy stupid insurance. Then tax the insurance.

It's the 21st century, people don't accept responsibility for their actions anymore. Get with the times

That is not the point, Clockwood. The point is whether or not we should place a tax on you, and people like you.

Ah, but I am about as safe as I could get. I don't smoke, I drink only very lightly, I drive a nice and sensible car without really speeding, and I have kept myself at 150 pounds and reasonable fitness. While I am indeed taxed too much for my liking, as if one can be taxed too little, I thought we were speaking about the people who did reckless and stupid things with their lives and then expect others to pay to have their brains scraped off the street.

Now, I really don't mind people doing stupid things to get themselves killed. Just as long as I don't have to clean up the mess or have to pay additional taxes to keep their comatose wreck alive for the next thirty-five years. Just a little extra something should be put on them in the form of a little extra sales tax on goods related to the activity in question or on the annual tax forms or in the form of some sort of insurance policy. It shouldn't be there to make them give up their activity; just to pay for whatever ill fate might be tempted by their actions. Thats all.

I don't disagree with you on this Clockwood. I just think that the whole idea is stupid. Those who smoke already pay an exorbitant tax. Those who are overweight pay a reasonable amount for the exorbitant amounts of food they eat. Those who do stupid things are already covered to an acceptable level, imo.

  19. that tax should cover any cancer-related hospitalizations, insurance for the inevitable
see the new increase in 2XD? people (kids too), that are getting both type I & II of diabetes? we're too overweight
like the kids I see in videos skateboarding down stairway ramps & landing face-first? ouch!!! that's gotta hurt!

    1) cancer does have other causes you know. and cancer isnt the only smoking related disease.

    2) they do not pay enough for the foods they eat, because as the corporations get rich off the profit, they are able to lower the price, and allow more people to get in on the stupid eating fad.

    3) with the amount of gangs and violent crime in america, you should be thankful for a passtime which doesnt involve shooting-related injuries.

It should, but do you think it does? I don't know if it does or not. Maybe a lot of it is being spent on the war on terror (an idiotic war if there ever was one - what are the victory conditions? - when will it ever end? - are there clear, identifiable objectives, deadlines, surrender conditions? - it's an idiotic term).

I agree we are too overweight. Why do we eat so much fast food, though? Why don't we cook as many "healthy" meals as we used to?

What are we gonna do, though? Seriously.

Tax money from one source or another usually does not go into any one thing. It all gets poured into one big pot that can be tapped to pay for anything the government does. There are exceptions, but not many.
