Everyone seems to think they know what's best for the country they live in. So here's your chance to tell us how you'd run the place if you were the big cheese. You can detail things like the budget, quality of living, renovations to infrastructure, etc. Would it be a democracy or a dictatorship? Free healthcare? Life-sucking taxes? What's your ideas for improvement?

I think we need some new long-distance transportation. The airplane companies dominate the cross-country travel. We need...TRAINS! yes, a vast network of tracks linking the country, making it more affordable (and more aesthetically enjoyable) to travel across the country! I found this article, but I don't know how credible the site is, or the content. I just love links ^_^

Maybe the overall network would look a bit like this?

I was thinking something like 5 or 6 tracks? Passenger transportation, freight, and maintenance would all have their own tracks.

Something on a scale that massive would generate the need for a helluva lot of construction workers, so there's some jobs there for ya.

And as I mentioned in a previous thread I made, I kinda like that extra $3,070,065,500 a month to help pay the utilities...

I'll post more crap when I brainstorm it...

Stop all wars. Spend to educate not to eliminate.

Then who would we exploit to take their natural resources? And what would you use to manipulate the public?

There is a thing called TRADE, ever hear of it? Well then let us TRADE with others for what they have instead of just blowing the fuck out of them and only making them angry. Wouldn't it be better if we just PAID them for their resources as we do in many countries already? Or trade with them for goods and services that we can give to them. It costs trillions for wars which could be used for better education, welfare and other services that are in great need of focus.

Try to get the country out of debt while lowering government spending.

    Representative Democracy.

That actually isn't a bad idea.

Easier said then done. But what I think we really need to do, is avoid wars. We can't stop them, but we can stay out of them. Only if we are attacked would it be neccessary to enter a war.

If we could extend the idea of the European Union and we get the World Union?
    Sounds utopian?
But 100 years ago (or 50) the idea of European Union would be a utopia.

I would agree that stopping all wars would be a great thing. Now...can we convince our enemies to please stop attacking us, attacking our allies, committing genocide, committing acts of terrorism, smuggling drugs into our country, counterfeiting our money, attempting to assassinate our presidents, committing human rights violations, and kidnapping our citizens?

Let me know when you get all that figured out.

well having a much smaller military budget wouldnt allow the US to do all the things that created (and trained and armed) a lot of your enemies and incited them to commit acts of terrorism and counter terrorism in the first place - so there's a couple of problems solved at a stroke.
Issues such as drugs and counterfeitting are law enforcement issues not military ones so removing funding from the military could allow for more funding to combat drugs and counterfeitting - furthermore american military intervention over the last 30 years has in some cases directly or indirectly helpoed the drug trade - such as cia involvement in heroin trafficing by erstwhile allies, and the toppling of the taliban being responsible for the resurgence in the opium trade in afghanistan.
The last US president to be assasinated was murdered by a criminal organisation (probably) - again law and order - not military funding would be of more use.
The US shows little interest in human rights violations - they have enough dirt on themseves in that respect to keep quiet unless it provides a convenient excuse for an expensive political distraction or resource theft - likewise with the kidnapping - the US military has done plenty of that recently - slashing budgets might stop the tit for tat.

We trained some future members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban when we supported Afghanistan in their bid to repel the Soviet invasion of their country. Of course we had no way of knowing those guys would turn on us for helping them free their country of a brutal Russian invasion. No good deed goes unpunished, I suppose.

Not when the drug trafficking and counterfeiting are committed by foreign administrations (a la North Korea).

You're right -- I suppose we should have left the Taliban in power so they could beat their women with sticks and stone women to death in soccer fields.

    - Saddam Hussein attempted to assassinate George HW Bush in 1993.
    - Al Qaeda attempted to assassinate George W. Bush on September 11, 2001.
    - Al Qaeda attempted to assassinate former President Clinton in 2006.

Also, why is the left so fixated on cutting the defense budget? Considering defense only account for 20-30% of Federal spending, cutting it would hardly solve any problems...it would just weaken us. The real solution, painful as it may be, is to cut entitlements.

    Puh-lease! Are you for real?

Double puh-lease! What resource theft? What are you talking about? FYI - virtually all our former enemies are now economic powerhouses -- Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea (NK was the enemy there). Iraq's economy is now booming. The discovery of mineral reserves in Afghanistan will eventually make the Afghans rich, too. And how many Middle Eastern countries are gushing cash because of our BUYING oil from them? Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar...

    Resource theft...

    What a laugh!

I would give tax breaks to corporations that funded education and make all education completely free.

I would also change the educational system so it was not circumscribed as Arts Sciences Commerce, but as streams of choice leading to a vocation with well rounded attention e.g. some training in arts, commerce science and health for all and better focus on developing vocational skills rather than cramming tomes.

Many countries were not starting wars but only were caught up in them. So many countries do not need wars to keep their economy going as well.
