    Shit what's difficult about that?
Anyone can build a device, point it at something then read the results and say "It doesn't register as any known life form Captain".

True, but I doubt that would win the ten million.

All they need to do is to take a blood sample with a pin prick then analyze what the blood is made up of with a program built into the device to break down the blood into what ever it has in it. They do that already at hospitals with programs already developed in their setting. So all that's needed is just a way to get the program to "see" the blood to begin with.

That may be, but if you read the article, they are asking for a very broad spectrum of analysis better and quicker than a doctor could make, and all of that in something the size of your cell phone.

If our heath system were such that everyone could go and see a doctor on short notice without it costing an arm and a leg, maybe I'd agree that we don't need it. But I know a lot of people that never go to a doctor unless they are to sick to protest going.

Then just enhance the already existing program that's available and include other programs that include what your urine sample gives, what your heart monitor tell , what your eye tests says and on and on. Combine the many programs into one continuous program that could be put into a laptop and the devices needed to take all the information needed to put into the laptop then let the laptop with the program process the tests and give the results.

I don't recall Spock or Bones ever taking blood or asking someone to pee in a cup. Whether or not the requirements of the contest will allow such inefficient and barbaric methods remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be a "true" tricorder if you have to actually do more than scan the patient.

Yes they could do that, but it won't be long before real super computing takes place in the cloud and anybody with a smart phone will have access to super computing. So as soon as the diagnostic software is perfected we should be in business.

I hear what you are saying and I agree that we can't make a Startrek tricorder yet. But I think we can make a portable diagnostic tool that could make a real difference to the welfare of a lot of people, and once started will continue to improve over time.

You should read some fan fiction, ... it gets freakier than that!
