Some new study says women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men. Psychologists who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists. Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information. The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses. The results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators. Although women are more successful in tests requiring them to remember the position of objects, men consistently do better in tasks requiring navigation and uncovering hidden objects. The research team used virtual reality simulations of two common tests of spatial learning and memory....Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/01/03/ngay103.xml Dumb test. Unbelievable results. I'm a woman and an AWESOME driver. I must drive "like a man". Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I get turned around easily. But once I've been somewhere, I never forget. My husband is the opposite. I hate when people give me east/west directions. I need left/right directions!!
I admit I do have some trouble in new areas, but I tend to drive on the fast side and very defensively. I have never been in an accident and I tend to get out of speeding tickets. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Yeah, so much for that stupid study. Thanks James. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
My boyfirend is a horrible driver. Until last December, I had never been in an accident or received a ticket. ~String
Long story short: Some old guy stopped dead on the highway (freeway, whatever) during a snowstorm, and though I wasn't going too fast, I hit him. Totally my fault: I shouldn't have been driving that close (I really couldn't even see him). BUT, I didn't even leave a mark on my car and all I did was crack one of his tail lights. I didn't get ticketed, but (as Allah as my witness), he's suing me (Geico, whatever) for a quarter million dollars. Bastard. ~String
LOL, I read that as 'dropped dead' so I was confused as to how he was suing you. <duh> Is he suing for whiplash?
Yes I'm not surprised, they are probably too busy with their dress and makeup, the gay men, to be paying attention to the road, and the gay women are probably too busy with their whatever they do
That's not because they're bad drivers, it's because they tend to take risks, drive drunk, speed, etc. If women are better drivers, why has no woman ever won the Indy 500, or any other major racing competition? And I'll bet you completely made up the heterosexual part. Is the sexual preference of the driver often recorded in fatal accidents? I'd think not.
Same reason no woman ever won a weaving competition in old Persia everyone in old Persia knew that women couldn't weave and sew as well as men. They lacked the fine motor coordination and spatial perception skills. I don't think driving is a physical skill, beyond the minimum necessary to see where you're going and keep it between the lines. It's a social and political skill, and young men are really bad at it on average. What's going to even the accident stats out is the cell phone and women smoking, on the one hand, and the crackdown on drunks, on the other. Boost the women's accidents, cut down the men's, and the stats will balance a bit.
A car full of girls is even worse. Laughing and screaming while they drive, and then of course when they take a sharp turn at a fast speed, they all laugh and giggle and lean on each other, oh man, that's the worse. - N
'Young' is a relative term, of course, but the age group with the most fatal accidents (in the US, at least) is 25-44 -http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/Resources/DatabaseResources/QuickFacts/TrafficCrashes/crash04.htm According to the statistics in the US, here are the racial groups, in descending order, who have the most fatalities, per capita, in traffic accidents: 1. American Indians (most fatalities per capita) 2. Hispanics 3. Asian/Pacific Islanders 4. Black Africans 5. Non-Hispanic Whites (least fatalities per capita) Every group save Asians is more likely to be intoxicated during the crash. It is little surprise that, among all racial groups, one is less likely to be in a fatal alcohol-related accident the more formal education one has. It is true that, per capita, more 16-20 year olds have fatal traffic accidents than any other age group. Whites are least likely to have a child aged four or younger killed who was wearing neither a seat belt nor had a safety seat. None of these statistics, however, account for miles driven by group, and therefore should be treated with perspective. http://www.watchtheroad.org/809956.pdf -The NHTSA's National Center for Statistics and Analysis
