I just bought a new computer that comes with Vista (ergh.) and I'm trying to connect it to my current home wireless internet network thingo. Vista is asking me for a security key but will not accept anything less than 8 characters.

So, I even went onto the XP machine and changed the passwords on my router page and Vista still won't accept my password. WHAT THE FREAK?!?!

    Any ideas, guys??

I'm sure you can if you know what those things are. Hahaha.

...please assume I know nothing about computers.

    Hmmmm....that's weird.
I have very little experience with vista specifically, so I don't know the exact process involved in navigating through its zero-config utility's settings (or equivalent)-- but I wonder if it wants you to manually select what kind of WEP Key to use when connecting to the network (IE - 64/128 bit)?
