I could have sworn there was an SP4. I was able to get SP3 but anyone know if there was a fourth service pack.

I think SP4 was only on the NT4. Ever since NT MS has tried hard to make people upgrade instead of patch what was originally broken.
Example, why sit around on Vista waiting for a SP when Win7 does away with an originally flawed Vista OS. Win7 is, in itself a SP IMHO.

but I'm biased to slagging off MS at any given turn.

13 years of service support is pretty darn good....

I only just got rid of supporting some NT4 servers about 18 months ago. They were still doing what they were specced to do, so the customer really needed some persuasion.

They needed service packs for all the hardware advancements coming about. An example is enabling faster USB support say if USB was in transition while the OS was first released. For my purposes NT4 would have worked fine but some programs written after NT4 wont even install, even though as far as i can tell dont need XP or later.

Actually Win2K would be better since NT is a first generation 32bit OS. And afaik, that was NT4 because i dont even recall any NT1,2,3.

Just a file sever. They ask for a file and it shows the file.

No, they were web servers hosting a SQL database.
