I'm installing Internet Explorer 6 on windows ME for someone. No amtter what I try, it will stop installing at 90% and say that it could not install the components. I've tried everything to get it to work and it failed. I've searched Microsoft and Gogle for answers and found nothing that worked. Any help is appreciated.
Please don't be mad at me, but does that person really need IE6?
I mean, Firefox or Opera in most cases is just fine.

The person needd IE6 to install the latest version of MSN Messenger.
Maybe that person can use Trillian or Gaim to chat on the MSN Messenger network?
There is a free Trillian version.
ME is a piece of &*(^. If you must have windows get 2000

I don't really have a choice, it's for someone else...
I'll try the Trillian thing... but I still want to install IE6. Ideas?

Did you make sure Windows Updates are all up to date?
What are some of the system specs? Is it an old or new computer? Why are you using Windows ME? First thing I would do is make sure that it's up to date.

I downloaded every update that was available. It had Windows ME on it because I work at a library and people bring their stuff in to get it fixed for a "donation" to the library. I could tell the computer was set up by a computer tech though because it had x-setup, registry detectors and all that fun stuff. I disabled the programs that would give me a hard time installing IE. I just installed Trillian and it connects just fine, so the computer will work. The funny thing is that the computer technician (this idiot local guy who sells $1000 computers for $2000) installed Windows ME! If I have to format, I always install XP and Firefox and tweak everything so that there are no problems.

you sholud have done it in linux and used GAIM, or aMSN, teach them to use the superior OS
Gaim can be used on Windows
A client is always right. If he needs WinME you don't argue with him
Linux is not a superior OS. Each has a purpose.
A gamer or a graphical artist will laugh in your face when you'll try to explain superiority of Linux.

I'm not going to teach a 65 year old lady to use Linux. She is actually quite internet-savvy for her age but I wouldn't push it.
Well, you know these "revolutionaries", always trying to impose their "truth" upon others. Ignore

You sound like a pretty computer savvy guy. I would recommend
trying the following:
TRY 1:
* Eliminate all browser helper objects, eliminate all non-essential processes
(iexplore.exe included of course), launch the installer, terminate all
instances of explorer.exe, and install the browser.
WHY: BHOs will latch on to both iexplore.exe and explorer.exe in Win ME.
Existing BHOs may have behaviors that result in the installer
deadlocking.
TRY 2:
* Install the browser in Safe mode.
WHY: A rougue driver may be causing the problem through low-level hooking
deadlocks.

can you not download MSN thru a different computer that has IE6, then copy it over thru network or CD?
