Ok so as I am looking here and there on things to do and settling with my classes...I have some spare time in my week and was thinking of becoming a volunteer at a museum. The museum is very unique, however they require that all volunteers are to sign a contract that they will do a 10-week training session and that they will do volunteering for the whole year with x number of hours per week. Now I love what museum is showing to the people, the education of museum is unprecedented, but what really bugs me is why consider volunteering? Is volunteering really worth it? Or should I just look for a job in McDonalds and serve "x-tra large fries, double cheeseburger with double..." and etc. ? :bugeye: what do you think?

    Go for it.

I'm a big volunteer, partly by nature & partly due to circumstances. I've never signed a contract for it & never will. I need more info to form a good opinion on the training but 10 weeks doesn't seem right. A solid commitment of a year doesn't seem good either. WHAT do they expect will happen if you're a good volunteer for 4 months then quit???

That depends if you are really interested in furthering your own advancement in the field of work you are interested in doing when you are finished with your education or if you are just a type of person who wants to help out for free for the communities needed.

I would definitely choose volunteering at a museum (that is, if you don't need the money).

Why would I rob a museum that I myself adore the beauty of? :bugeye: seriously now...

Well the reason I would want to do this is to have museum as a reference for me for university. Breaking a contract is not punishable, but only shows time wasted.

volunteer work is exactly that. volunteering your services for free.
if anyone expected more than i was willing to give then they would pay me for it.

chose something that really benifits the community and interests you. I am a st johns vollenteer because it helps people AND it gets me more clinical experiance which will be helpful when i join the proffessional ambulance service (not to mention it looks good on my resume and i can get a reference from it as well).

As for the contract that sounds very strange, the only "contracts" i have ever signed for vollenter work were things like that i have the qualifactions im claiming to and that they can check my police record. Red cross do have strict conditions for aplication to do with political affiliation (which i couldnt agree to) because of there roll in the generva convention but even they dont force you do work.

Do you really need the money or just want some extra income? If it's about extra income, I would choose the museum because of the possibility to socialize with interesting people, references, and opportunities to learn. Also, it sounds like this could enhance your resume.
