View Full Version : Why is it that the older you get
Why is it that the older you get, the less things you say or less words you use when you talk, explain, or give advice.
Anyone notice this phenomenon from older people?
It seem that the more wisdom you have, the less words you use.
Neurocomp2003 03-09-04, 05:16 PM because they no what words to use....its throught experience.
its like when your first reading and you pronounce the words by syllable and are able to read it out loud...but when you get older the words come naturally
Ozymandias 03-09-04, 06:49 PM Because (most) people learn how to convey their point more efficiently, with use of fewer words. You don't need to waste breath on unnecessary words anymore.
chunkylover58 03-09-04, 07:02 PM You're very tired and you need a nap and you don't have time to talk because if you time it just right you can wake up from said nap, make the Early Bird special at the Golden Corral and be back home again without missing the beginning of Matlock.

Then people must be genetically programmed to be stupider the more gadgets they have.
I can picture the ancient elderly, so to speak, turning the world on a dime with some simple statement. A wrinkled old Chinese grandfather and his koans.
Nowadays, the elderly are some of the most irritable bunch and you put up with hearing them on the phone, cellphones, in front of the television talking right at it, in the car with full driving privileges at 105 years old doing a 105 down the wrong lane and then complaining about it when they get pulled over.
Totally disagree with that 'aged to perfection' hogwash.
interesting, your keen description of the elderly reminds of papa simpson.
chunkylover58 03-11-04, 01:30 PM The IMPORTANT thing was that I had an ONION on my belt.....which was the style of the time.

What gendy's trying to say is, "I hate elderly drivers".
Maybe the answer is; the younger you are the tougher it is to express what you're trying to say... (hahaha)
reformedtopunk 03-11-04, 07:50 PM actually i agree, the number of annoying old people i've met FAR outnumbers the ammount of wise old people i've met.
It's seems that older people just know when to shut up and let people absorb what they said.
lixluke 03-11-04, 10:13 PM Because when you are older, you end up having more teeth to brush.
i don't get that statement, what does having more teeth to brush mean?
lixluke 03-12-04, 09:33 AM Duh. The more time you spend having to brush your teeth, the less time you have to talk.
chunkylover58 03-12-04, 10:09 AM They don't brush their teeth. They let them soak in a glass on the bedside table overnight,
immane1 03-12-04, 12:55 PM No wind, no waves.

In that case I'll keep all my, ahem, babbling down to one word: succinylcholine.
Try some.

If anything they talk more if only to fill the gaping holes in their blossoming loneliness.
What I'd *give* to make George the irriating fossil down on Main Street selling boiled peanuts with his belt up to his neck to shut the fuck up please.
He even has a cell phone.
Loneliness comes with age and most people nowadays go crazy since they can't do shit without people around.
chunkylover58 03-12-04, 03:34 PM Generally, I'd say annoyingly talkative old people were annoyingly talkative young people. More taciturn old people were, likewise, taciturn yoots.
I'm sure, to a degree, there may be some changes in general disposition occurring with age, but I'd say today's crotchety old coot was yesterday's bitter young assmunch.

Since you love threesomes so much here's three more: proletarian humor bites.

There. Now thats not babbling but rather straight to the point without the use of pointless words - maybe you are older than I thought. "Why is it that the older you get..." (hahaha)
hypewaders 03-13-04, 10:59 PM Dying words are generally succint, if not wise.
Fraggle Rocker 03-13-04, 11:05 PM I'm one of the oldest people here (60) so let me have a crack at it.
In a situation where we're made to feel useful, our instincts to be "elders" kicks in. What civilization asks of us is our wisdom. Wisdom is best understood when stated concisely.
In more social circumstances all humans talk to hear the sounds of their own and each other's voices. It's an instinctual thing. Many other social species like dogs and cetaceans do it too. A flock of parrots will drive you crazy with their content-free chatter. The older you get, the more stuff you have to chatter about.
There are other reasons that older people than I talk too much. Because of the breakdown of the family unit they are often lonely, so when they get their turn in line at the supermarket they don't want the conversation with the checkout lady to end.
Sometimes the brain gives out before the body and people lose the faculty that allows them to talk sensibly, much less efficiently.
That's the thing that scares many of us the most as we approach retirement age. We wish our bodies came equipped with sensors that could detect a stroke or the onset of Alzheimer's, and start a five-day self-destruct sequence that would give us enough time to put things in order and say goodbye, but not have to live through that long degrading twilight.
firdroirich 03-14-04, 11:11 PM Why is it that the older you get ..... - the better you were :D
Nah, I reckon that the experience gained from direct involvement superseds what language has developed so basically there are no words to accurately say what you know , sufism calls this "the secret protects itself, for he who knows it is stricken dumb"
Morteza Olangui 03-16-04, 01:28 AM Hi
Saadi, the Iranian poet says, the one who keeps silent, his/her weakness and strength will not surface."
So the older we get, the cleverer we become. As people expect us to say wise things and we want to show us wise too - I think nobody likes to sound dumb - we utter less words. I am 48. J`aime :) bavarder. But I do not get the opportunity. quack - quack
Rentonboyo 03-16-04, 02:48 AM i would like to think the more wisdom you gain the more you have to share, so wouldn't that make the oldest and *sometimes* wisest most vocal?
oh, and im sure some old people just dont kno wtf is going on anymore and dont want to reveal their weakness, much like the silent stoner...
As I've gotten older, I tried using more words to explain, since people just didn't get it. And then I realized that they just weren't paying attention. I think as people age, they realize that nobody gives a rat's behind, anyway.
A bit of their soul dies every day, but that's what life is.
Bone Salvage 03-16-04, 03:17 AM Having worked with Geriatric people for a few years, I began to realize this:
Wisdom is not begot with age.
Certainly the potential for wisdom would increase with the number of years accumulated, however, that only increases the POTENTIAL and not the actual wisdom itself. By the same token, with more years spent on earth one should be able to accumulate more money, thereby making all elderly people wealthy. All elders are not wealthy, nor are they all wise.
As to the less words used... maybe some people get tired of hearing themselves say the same words for 85 years. (How many "umms..." can one endure in a lifetime?)
However, some people certainly do not. :)
Dreamwalker 03-20-04, 07:47 AM Perhaps old people do not talk so much because they are afraid that their fake teeth drop out. Alternatively they came to the conclusion that many people love to talk and do not care what you say, so they stop wasting their words.
Does anybody listen to the things I say
