View Full Version : Why do people start smoking?

What could drive someone smoking? It seems like the stupidest and most illogical and idiotic thing to start doing. I don't think there are any pros to it but there are plenty of cons. Don't they realise that the cigs could kill them or at least cause them a lot of suffering?

When G.L.Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mt.Everest, he replied - "because it's there".

Perhaps that's your answer.

have you ever smoked before?

it's like a warm blanket. it relaxes you. and yes of course it gives you cancer but most people don't really plan that far ahead.

pros:feels good

cons: gives you cancer(way in the future)

i know it's not completly logical. but people aren't completly logical.

off topic. there's this guy in my dept who is a hardcore chain smoker. you can smell him coming. and so is his gf. and they have a small child!

most people i know who smoke started when they were 14-15, coz all their friends did it....and now they're addicted. me, i only smoked a cigarette once to see what the fuss was about and i couldnt figure it out.

pot is another story....:D :m:

Most kids start because they think it looks cool and since they are at that age when looking cool is all that matters, then starting smoking is a very logical choice.
Why adults start must just be out of pure dumbness.

I don't think it's quite so much "looking cool" as it is a method of group-identification. It is a status thing, a "one of us" collaboration between consciences. But I can remember trying cigarettes at 12 for style and not liking it. When I was 15, I didn't feel so much "cool" as I did a sense of properly belonging to this small circle of friends huddled in the woods near the school.

Speaking of "cool"--did those "Truth" ads ever really do anyone any good? Seriously, were those bratty, belligerent kids in those commercials "cool"? The best explanation I've ever heard is that the campaign is the tobacco industry's court-ordered penance, which would make sense, since it depicts non-smokers as pricks.

I'd love to see a guerilla advert campaign where snotty teenagers pour bottles of Coca Cola on something and let the audience watch the paint dissolve. Or a "storming-the-gates" commercial with camera-armed angry teens stomping into Pepsi's front office: How do you sleep at night selling addictive solvent to children?

Now that would be "cool".

(PS - irrelevant: What would be even cooler is if the "stoner lobby" took to the habit of buying advert space that sold no products but merely provided "intermission"; perhaps sound and color. Looking into a website for (This moment brought to you by) "The Green Chamber" or some-such, people wouldn't find much. The pot connection would be obvious, but there would only be a message board for its members or something like that. There would be no preaching or politics from the organization; it would merely establish the pot connection so that people realized that a group was buying up two minutes' airtime in the middle of prime time every night specifically so that stoners could smoke a quick bowl without having Acura or Pepsi or Budweiser blaring through their living rooms. Or snack-time: you wouldn't miss a thing, not even those moments of disaster shown in local-affiliate news advertisements; I know people who watch for those things--Oh, that had to hurt ...! But anyway, two minutes of Rhys Chatham or Sonic Youth or Miles Davis or some-such every night between Simpsons and whatever they schedule after it this week? Now that would be cool ....)

How do you sleep at night selling addictive solvent to children?

you mean like water?

The reasons:

- all the cool kids do it

- people tell you not to

- the sweet goddess, nicotine

I am so close to starting atm (I've never smoked a single one before). Just because I'm bored, it's something to do, something to hold. Plus I spend so much time in the kitchen (in uni accommodation it's either teeny bedroom or kitchen with TV and people) it's an alternative to eating or drinking tea, both of which I do too much. Plus I live with people who are heavy smokers, so I see cigarettes a lot.

But I don't think I will start up, I really can't be bothered spending all the money on fags and lighters, having my clothes smellm, ruining my lungs (however mildly).

A. Tryed and enjoy it,
B. Peer Pressure,
C. Personal reasons,
D. Get addicted to the tobacco from smoking joints too much.

All of which lead to addiction.
For me it was D but A is also relevant.

Cheers.

Both my parents smoked so i think thats probably why i started. ive always thought that most people smoked but it seems to me now that non-smokers outnumber the smokers.

I think people who dont smoke only do it to look cool. They think its hard and clever. :D

I think people who dont smoke only do it to look cool. They think its hard and clever i have never smoked, because i have never seen the attraction of it. I cannot stand the smell of it, and most of my friends used to smoke!:D
