I was talking to a friend today and she told me how much our friendship meant to her. Some of the things she said struck a chord and I realised they were true of many of my interactions here at sciforums. I can't think of anyone I dislike here (though I get impatient with quite a few). But when I try to pinpoint why I like you lot, its hard to put it in words.

I think it's hard to genuinely dislike one another here. I despise some of the personas that I have encountered over the years, but it's hard to imagine that these façades reflect accurately the real people involved. Any number of people I've argued fiercely with over the years would probably be quite fun to drink with. Of course, if their personas are to be believed, they wouldn't drink with me.

None of this suggests I understand the motives of their deceptions, but rather than holding it against them, it's cause for sympathy. As Rilke noted, "We are unutterably alone, essentially, especially in the things most intimate and important to us."

well i like people here because they give advice and they make me see sense (most of the time) even baron max who i cant seem to see eye to eye with will make me see sense from time to time

Usually Women...sad to say..are a bit too lacking in humour to get my plaudits and as someone who runs a forum there is a tendency for many to take themselves very seriously..
