Simple question. Why do they remain and why are they compelled to stay?

Bush and Cheney are determined to bankrupt the country and break the military in order to promote the idea of privitization. Also, they like that oil has gone up to almost $100 a barrel. Also, they aren't willing to admit any mistakes.

The explanation we're being given now, even by Bush's opponents, is that if we left Iraq things would become even worse there. I'm not kidding, this is what they give us for a "reason."

Like they think we're too stupid to notice that things have gotten progressively worse there since we first stormed in looking for Saddam? Oh wait, it seems like a lot of my fellow Americans really are that stupid.

To whoever it was on that other thread who lambasted me for calling my neighbors illiterate jackasses, you owe me an apology.

What annoys me is that through all the talk of 'staying the course' Osama Bin Laden is never mentioned anymore, as if we'll just forget about their initial public reasons for going to war in the first place if they don't mention his name, and yet they love to bring up 9/11.

Better question: Why were we compelled to bother ourselves with having to be there instead of being home, hanging out with our families?

We were invited--okay, challenged. Same thing.

Now we're there, and we'll be there as long as protecting our families is more important than just hanging out with them.

    Simple.

If Islam wants to make our business its businees it shouldn't pretend shock at the fact that we're perfectly willing to make its business our business until it no longer wants to make our business its business.

    Simple.

You really believe the US being in Iraq is protecting Americans from the kinds of people who pulled off 9/11?

No, but obviously Bush does as they are very often mentioned in the same sentence.

Yes. Evidenced by the fact there now are far fewer of "those kinds of people" extant upon the face of this planet.

We're pretty damn good at it, too.

And we're getting even better at it, the longer it takes.

It's that old story about sitting on the back of the sleeping tiger and then having to suffer how the hell you get off it alive after you've awakened it.

It affords everyone the opportunity to learn the difference between ignorance and stupidity--ignorance being correctable by education, stupidity not so much.

Sitting Bull was ignorant. Custer was stupid.

Oh c'mon pjdude1219, you could've at least tried to hide that insult. Or embellished it with actual content. Geez.

But it seems to me that all that's being killed now are the foot soldiers. I wouldn't call the perpetrators and planners of 9/11 foot soldiers. Well, the perpetrators to a certain extent, sure. But I think you get my point, the people being killed in Iraq aren't the kinds of people who were behind 9/11.

You do know that probabaly isn't the case, right ? That the people who count jihadists are counting more ofthem this year than last, more last year than in 2003, and so forth ?

That one of the serious arguemnts put forth by the people who support this war is that if we leave now the jihadists will take over Iraq - and thereby gain real political power in an important state for the first time in modern times ?

Foolishnss of course - AQ hasn't a ghost of a chance in Iraq after the Americans leave - but not the sort of thing one says about a dwindling foe. And Pakistan is another story.

Frankly, the game is being played out without you.

What was it you were presuming to say?

You're free to believe whatever floats your boat.

We'll allow time to tell which of us was the more believable.
