I don't understand what you mean by winzip files not showing the file. But, I have a friend who never seems to understand that you choose the directory to download to. He just keeps clicking ok and can never find anything after it's downloaded. Are you checking the default download location? Download it again and see where it's being placed.

I tried the download option, I don't know what the zipdive thing is. Some special feature of winzip? If so, I don't know.

Um, if you're using MSN, there's a download manager, which links to the spot where the downloaded file is.

Why oh why? Because that's what Undecided is using. And me, too.

I don't mean the service. I mean MSN Explorer. If that's what you were talking about. If not, never mind. Although dial-up does suck.

I don't understand what you mean by winzip files not showing the file.

Ok I press download, and it doesn't give me the option to save firstly. Then when the download is complete the WinZip window opens. So I do all the clicks, and then it doesn't Zip the file I downloaded, it asks me to search for the file. This never used to happen, I don't know what to do?

Try downloading the file to your desktop from there, right click on all of the items there should be an option add to Zip, click on that see if that works?

That's what I used to do with these files, usually you would get a "open, save, etc" box at first and then it would download, then tada. I suggest you guys try downloading at least one file, and try to zip it. It's virtually impossible, but I don't understand why?

Try right-click, save target as. Only when I did it it for some reason wouldn't let me save. Oh well. Anyways, sorry Undecided, my pc froze so I couldn't try it myself (I'll deal with this mill in a week).

OK, here's what I think happened. When you click to download something, it normally brings up the box (open, save, etc...). I'm guessing you sometime you clicked open and checked the box to not show this again. So it now defaults to open it in winzip instead of saving it. It actually does save the file in a temp folder somewhere. There's several, you can try searching your hard drive for the file name. I set mine like this and tried to find out how to reverse this setting, and I can't figure it out. There should be a way, but microsoft is notorious for making things more difficult than they need to be.

I use winrar instead of winzip. There was no option to save the zip file, but I could extract the files from the archive to my desktop (or where ever) and then rezip them easily.

I bet whitewolf's suggestion to right-click and choose save as will work. I seem to remember having to resort to this before. It's a pain in the ass, but that's how microsoft likes to do things. If anyone knows how to change this setting I would be very interested to hear it. I don't use IE myself, but I have come across this problem a few times myself. And some of my friends have the same problem. I've never found a solution other than reinstall. Thanks Bill, you moneygrubbin' bitch.

edit: I just did a search for the file I downloaded, found it in Documents and Settings\{my user folder}\recent. Of course, yours may not be recent. Not sure how often recent gets cleaned out. Not too often I'd guess. That's in XP by the way.

Edit again: That's weird, I just went to that folder, it's actually My Recent Documents (hidden folder by the way). It's not the actual file, it's a shortcut to the file. It points to the desktop. Maybe it deletes the file immediately after download. I always thought it would go into a temp directory somewhere until you cleaned it out.

Btw, if you've ticked your download box to automatically download, you can untick it the next time you are downloading (Just remember to untick it) this will save reinstalling.

There is no actual keyboard shortcut for Save as (which is a pity, but in cases of colleges and universities they tend to disable right click, which makes saving difficult).

Mno nothing difficult; if the right-click is disabled, click and hold till a menue appears. At least that's how my college's computers function. I read it in some instructions accidentally, I'd never come up with that on my own.

Nope, doesn't work. It skips the open, save dialogue box and goes straight to the download. I can tick or untick the close this window when download is complete box. But the choice of opening or saving box is never shown. I'm sure that at one time I actually figured out how to do it. I can't remember what it was now though. Really, it doesn't matter much to me. I don't use IE. And I think I have warned my friends away from pigeonholing themselves this way as well. There will always be someone who could benefit from the advice though. If I could remember where the setting is. Probably a registry hack.
