The government has rushed legislation into parliament to ban gay marriages amid concerns gay couples could marry overseas and then seek court rulings in Australia on the status of the union.

Prime Minister John Howard has denied the changes discriminate against gay people.

"It does not discriminate against gay people," he told the Nine Network's A Current Affair program.

"It is discriminating in favour of an institution which is basic to the cohesion of our society."

"I'm opposed to changing the law in Australia to give them the same status as marriage that we all understand in our society," Mr Howard told a Darwin radio station during a tour of the Northern Territory capital today.

"That's not an expression of discrimination - it's just an expression that marriage as we understand it is one of the bedrock institutions of our society.




Now why do this?
I KNOW he wouldnt get the vote of the gay comunity ANYWAY but what does this do to his to help his vote?

Oh, havn't you heard? The religious right here in America has been very vocal about it. If we allow gay marriage, then our nation will crumble into the sea. Wrath of god and all that.

Asguard, aren't you aware that little Johnny is very much a part of the Christian right in this country? The man is uncomfortable with anything dealing with homosexuality. Tony Abbott is just his lacky, and like a true lacky, he believes just as Johnny does. Remember the debacle when Play School had that little story of the little girl with two mothers. Abbott was frothing at the mouth as he told Australia that children just should not learn about such things because it was bad. Shame he failed to realise that Play School was merely showing the life in a day of a little girl who actually did have two mothers and who goes to school with other children. Shame he and the rest of the Christian right failed to realise that to point the finger at this little girl and her family would only result in children of gay parents being abused further in society. Sad that Howard and his cronies fail to realise that there are children in Australia who have gay parents, and instead of NOT pointing them out as an example, they took the other road and took the stance that such families are abnormal and should be avoided.

Howard and his Christian right cronies hate homosexuality. They make it plain in the manner they speak and in the laws they pass. Laws, which I might add, can also be seen as a desperate and shameful vote grab as they try to appease the Christian majority who are unhappy about our part in the War in Iraq. Lets just hope that the Christian majority in this country realise the ignorance of the Government when they come to the ballot box.

I agree Asguard. It is disgraceful. But for the very right Howard cabinet, abortion is evil. In their twisted little minds, they may equate a 15 year old girl having a child as being normal and hetrosexual. For Howard and co, it's probably just a case of 'just as long as she's not gay'. If the public would not revolt against such a move, they would outlaw abortion and the morning after pill would be no more.

Australia saw the ugly side of Howard's cronies hate of homosexuality when one of them attacked Justice Kirby's homosexuality (by saying that he was gay and patrolled the streets in a Government car looking for young gay males to further corrupt with his homosexuality), and when it was proven that the accusations were very false, nothing was done to the minister who made the accusations. Kirby's reputation was left in tatters and the sick individual who accused him of it was barely given a slap on the wrist, if anything at all. And the only reason the minister got away with it is because he was such a coward that he made the accusations in Parliament where Parliamental privilege saved him from a defamation lawsuit.

The current plethora of laws by the Government is to appease the Christian right in this country. It is their way of trying to ensure their votes. They did the same in the last election with the child overboard incident (which was later revealed to have been a lie). I still remember that speech of Howard when he came out and said that Australia would not accept any person who threw their children overboard to try and get pity. It is a shame he did not also add that they threw their children overboard, not to drown them, but to save them from the sinking boat. He did not add that the children were thrown overboard, literally into the arms of the Australian Navy personel, who were waiting to save them from the sinking ship.

and to then accuse those very sailors of lying ect just to serve there OWN carers

and then the way Abbott treated workers

and then making him the health minister

and raising uni fees

and making it so a persons income is linked to there parents till they are 25
