View Full Version : Why Does Crap Like Twitter exist? MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:21 PM It's POINTLESS! Enmos 06-11-09, 02:21 PM Twitter ? MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:22 PM Yes, Twitter. Enmos 06-11-09, 02:22 PM What's twitter ? MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:22 PM www.twitter.com otheadp 06-11-09, 02:24 PM A place where you perpetually update your status. It tells a lot about what a bunch of douchebags we all are -- at least those of us who use twitter. Enmos 06-11-09, 02:24 PM www.twitter.com Ah yea, I already looked it up. Sorry, I should have done that before asking :o So it's a sort of Hives or MySpace.. I agree, it's useless. takandjive 06-11-09, 02:31 PM It's about maintaining pseudo-relationships with people in college you didn't really like. Enmos 06-11-09, 02:32 PM It's about maintaining pseudo-relationships with people in college you didn't really like. And family, acquaintances, even friends. It's insane. MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:36 PM Agree'd takandjive 06-11-09, 02:36 PM Exactly! At least on a forum there's slightly more exchange than, "Meow ^_^ OMG THNX 4 BEIN MY VIRTUAL FREND PERSON I USED TO SHARE A DORM WITH. HERE'S A PICTURE OF A FAIRY!" otheadp 06-11-09, 02:38 PM On the other hand, does everything have to be "useful" and "improving society"? That sort of North American linear thinking drives me up the roof. So what if it's useless and stupid and only douchebags use it? It's fun. Let the douchebags have their fun. More fodder for my shit-talking gland :) MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:41 PM If anything, it's a degredation to society. It's just another road leading toward obesity, laziness, and dependency. takandjive 06-11-09, 02:41 PM I think when it comes to personal relationships, they shouldn't be shallow and meaningless and without thought. Someone isn't my "friend" or "following my life" just because we went to the same uni or come from the same family tree. I value my friends at a deeper level than that. It's making a mockery of human interaction. mikenostic 06-11-09, 02:55 PM Twitter is for people who actually think other people really give a flying fuck about what they are doing. Hint to twitter members: unless you are a celebrity or pro athlete who has countless fans that have nothing better to do than to read up on what time you took a crap, nobody is interested in reading about what you've done throughout the day. MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 02:56 PM Well, I'm not surprised that this site has risen when it did. With unemployment levels at a high, it allows more people that sit on thier ass and do nothing all day to be able to waste more time. mikenostic 06-11-09, 02:59 PM Well, I'm not surprised that this site has risen when it did. With unemployment levels at a high, it allows more people that sit on thier ass and do nothing all day to be able to waste more time. Yeah because that's exactly what those people need to be doing instead of looking for a job. MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 03:02 PM Apparently. domesticated om 06-11-09, 03:06 PM It's POINTLESS! I've lost interest in the "social networking" aspect of these websites, but it is nice to keep up with various other entities (artists, musicians, etc). Twitter is an entirely different animal however. Has no redeeming values at all. MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 03:09 PM Nope. Hell, atleast on MySpace I can do more crap then just say "Hey look at me, I'm at work! huh huh huh har har." The site makes me want to swallow rusty nails. spidergoat 06-11-09, 03:12 PM I agree, it's totally ridiculous. I recently got a chain e-mail letter from a relative, and as if that wasn't enough, there was a link to her friend's twitterings. I have never read such pretentious inane bullshit. Keep in mind, I've been on sciforums for several years, so that's saying alot. Zap 06-11-09, 03:15 PM Misplaced vanity. S.A.M. 06-11-09, 03:15 PM Never underestimate the power of any tool with the ability to reach a large number of people. Thats how lobbies are made. MZ3Boy84 06-11-09, 03:17 PM The very concept of Twitter has been far over-used long before Twitter ever came about. There's no underestimating to it. It's a worthless application which promotes dependent indulgency. mikenostic 06-11-09, 03:23 PM Never underestimate the power of any tool with the ability to reach a large number of people. Thats how lobbies are made. ...AAAAAAND, never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups (whether physically together at the same place or together in 'spirit') S.A.M. 06-11-09, 03:27 PM The two need not be mutually exclusive. Stupid people also vote. EmmZ 06-11-09, 03:29 PM You're totally missing the point of them. Post Foucaultian Panoptic Nightmare is only the tip of the iceburg. Perhaps it's just a little too personal for some people. I see it as an electronic address book, I have some gaming people on my friends list but it's far too useful a tool to completely dismiss it completely. S.A.M. 06-11-09, 03:33 PM Some people thought the telephone was an electronic toy, other people thought no one would ever want or use a personal computer. I'd say its too soon to tell. But I'd say off hand its a powerful lobbying tool with easy access and can be used to great advantage. takandjive 06-11-09, 03:37 PM You're totally missing the point of them. Work in a Derrida quote and we give you a SciForums patch for your jacket. S.A.M. 06-11-09, 03:39 PM Imagine the power to transmit your thoughts to the world without even thinking. EmmZ 06-11-09, 03:45 PM +1 for Foucault reference. Work in a Derrida quote and we give you a SciForums patch for your jacket. I couldn't possibly. I've already exceeded my pseudo-intellectual bullshit quota for the day. takandjive 06-11-09, 03:48 PM I couldn't possibly. I've already exceeded my pseudo-intellectual bullshit quota for the day. I literally spit my soda. :D Fuck. I won't even ask what you think of Walter Benjamin. :D Enmos 06-12-09, 06:06 AM Stupid people also vote. No way.. ! That explains a lot.. lol cosmictraveler 06-12-09, 08:05 AM Imagine the power to transmit your thoughts to the world without even thinking. Millions of people already do that everyday. They call it talking, news and mail. cosmictraveler 06-12-09, 08:06 AM Twitter exists because those in control want it to. If the people who ran things do not want something, they never promote it. Absane 06-12-09, 09:56 AM I'm taking a shower!!!!111111 Liebling 06-12-09, 10:30 AM pics plz. chris4355 06-12-09, 02:36 PM I just made a facebook, does that make me just as lame? shorty_37 06-12-09, 11:32 PM Twitter is for people who actually think other people really give a flying fuck about what they are doing. LOL.... True I could give a shit about Twitter, Facebook, blogging and whatever else shit is out there. codanblad 06-13-09, 03:14 AM the whole myspace/twitter whatever exploded when they stopped requiring you to photobucket your photos, removed the photo limit and let you label the photos. i'd say about 80% of the time people spend on those is just cruising through people's albums. my gf's in love with facebook (same shit), at her uni a lot of chicks take their cameras to all the concerts, parties etc. they go to, so there's always constant stream of photos which you can comment on. you can run its inbuilt messenger in the same window, so usually she'll be chatting with someone at the same time. these sites are just meant to be mindless entertainment with some laidback socializing. they're not my cup of tea, but i can see why people are into them. codanblad 06-13-09, 03:15 AM Millions of people already do that everyday. They call it talking, news and mail. i wouldn't call talking transmitting my thoughts to the world. Challenger78 06-13-09, 09:37 AM It's POINTLESS! No shit. But people are pointless too. In fact, we lie to ourselves to give our existence meaning. So why shouldn't we lie to others, hoping that we by repetition and social cognizance we are validated, and our existence has meaning. Either that or we're really bored nowadays. S.A.M. 06-15-09, 04:39 PM Here is one use: But all throughout Saturday, as the demonstrations engulfed the Iranian capital of Tehran, America's three cable news stations were taking flack for their relative silence. As Huffington Post blogger Nico Pitney documented through searching the transcript database at TVEyes.com, American news networks on June 13 were mentioning Iran with far less frequency than networks overseas. Although CNN led the way among American networks with 91 mentions, it was still dwarfed by Canada's CTV (124 mentions), Britain's Sky News (149 mentions) and BBC News (177 mentions). This disparity led several frustrated users on Twitter to angrily complain that CNN, which had made its mark covering foreign events such as the first Gulf War and the Tiananmen Square protests, had dropped the ball. Using the Twitter hashtag "#CNNfail," Tweeters mocked the network's lack of coverage, particularly its decision to show a Larry King repeat on Saturday night while Iranians marched through the capital streets and clashed with riot police. By Sunday morning the "#CNNfail" hashtag had climbed into Twitter's trending topics list and CNN felt compelled to respond. As Pitney noted in an update at Huffington Post on Sunday night, "for the last few hours, CNN has been airing pretty consistent coverage of the Iran unrest, even referencing the Twitter-driven protests of their coverage." By Sunday evening, Pitney showed that CNN had stepped up its game and made more mentions of Iran on Sunday than any of the big international networks. But Twitter wasn't merely used to pressure the major networks to get on the story – it was also being used to deliver on-the-ground reports from both professional journalists and Iranian protestors themselves. Native Iranian Tweeters such as persiankiwi, StopAhmadi, IranElection09 and Change_for_Iran were providing real-time updates of protests in their areas, as well as linking to pictures and videos of riot police beating demonstrators with batons and breaking up peaceful protests. Although the Iranian government's main telecommunications provider had shut off text messaging services and had cut off access to most social networking Web sites by Monday morning, Iranian Tweeters were still able to communicate with the outside world using a continuously shifting series of proxy servers that they were posting periodically on Twitter throughout the day. Additionally, the Tweeters were instructing their followers to use pagereboot.com, a site that automatically refreshes Web addresses every second, to launch distributed DoS attacks on key government Web sites. Iranians also used Twitter to organize nighttime rooftop rallies where demonstrators would climb to the roofs of their buildings and chant slogans protesting the alleged fraudulent election http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9134386 Syzygys 06-21-09, 08:50 PM It has its place like PMs, but it is way overused. let's say you have friends all over and you move a lot, it is easier to update them by using Twitter. But writing on it in every 30 seconds about taking a dump is just too much.. spaceChild 06-21-09, 09:02 PM businesses use it as well; facebook, twitter all that garbage. To keep their clients updated with the business |
