View Full Version : Who goes to the movies anymore?
Syzygys 04-29-07, 06:26 AM Well, I guess if you are under 30 you still do.
We have stopped going about 2 years ago. Now it is about 1-2 occasions a year. For the rest we just order par-per-view for $4 for the whole family on the big screen TV instead of paying $7.5 per person, not to mention the popcorn and Coke. I can rewatch it if I liked it, sometimes I do.
And I haven't even brought up sticky seats, noisy teenagers or cellphones going off all the time.
So really, why would I want to go to the movies??? Oh yeah, I can also record the movie if Ifeel like it, although I don't.
phonetic 04-29-07, 09:07 AM Rarely. I suppose if I was a little more social I'd go more often. I used to go once or twice a month with friends, but we hated paying the equivalent of 20 ciggies and a bottle of wine to get in.
The industry need to move with the times and utilise the internet properly. Release PPV films the same day they go out in the cinema on the internet and on PPV.
Usually you can find a decent quality version of the movie to download before it's released on DVD. It's more tempting because of that and the fact it's free. Of course, that's terribly wrong.
I tried Amazon's DVD postal thing and it sucked. The way you have to have a list of DVD's you want at a particular time. They send you them in whatever order they feel like and there's a chance you won't get the more popular ones. Well, I lied a bit. It was useful to me because I wanted some fairly obscure documentaries.
I go about every weekend. $9 per ticket isn't expensive. With a big screen, great sound, comfy modern stadium seating, great A/C, previews, how can anyone think it should be $3 a ticket!? Concessions are ridiculously high. At KC AMC theaters outside non alcoholic drinks are allowed in, stuff a candy bar in your pocket and you are set! (It helps being the AMC HQ, hence the drinks deal)
I love movies and watching on a small screen at home (compared to theater screens) with all the distractions, etc isn't the same.
I love my movies!!!!!!!
Redefine91 04-30-07, 06:18 PM I fucking hate the movies. Aside from 300 I haven't seen a movie in theaters in over a year. But I will go see spiderman the night it comes out. The theater is over rated and overpriced, people are distracting and no one actually thinks silence is golden anymore.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 06:20 PM Well, I guess if you are under 30 you still do.

me and my wife still go to the movies, but we are very young, i am only 22 and she is only 20, (yeah we married very young),
we still get ripped off by the cinema assholes, i always think to myself why do we go to the cinema its a waste of money, people are always annoying, and the food and drinks are way over priced, especially in central london, we pay about £15 each for a ticket,
but then i think what the hell who cares, if i want to see the movie then i will go, its only money im gonna spend it anyway on some other crap,
peace.
I don't go to cinemas at all. The public stinks, many distractions and outrageous prices, not even mentioning the inane ads for which I didn't pay to watch.
Any way, I watch films at home with friends or alone, and mostly those are films which aren't shown at mainstream cinemas.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 06:21 PM also on. www.tv-links.co.uk you can watch the latest cinema movies for free with no download or charge.
the last movies i saw were 300 (i liked it) and curse of the golden flower (i hated it)
peace.
Syzygys 04-30-07, 07:40 PM Non-US posters probably don't know, but Netflix has a deal, $20 a month and you order as many DVDs as you want without late fees!!!
Now if you compare that with a $7.50 average ticketprice, even for a single person it pays off easily, not to mention families.
The picture quality is excellent on our 42 inches flat screen HD TV and we have 5 speakers sound system. So why the hell would I want to drive to the movies???
As I said, occasionally when I liked the ordered movie, I rewatched it the next day, which is still free in 24 hours. So nothing beats On-Demand... (pay-per-view)
On the other hand, I have a romantic feeling for drive-ins. There aren't many around here anymore, but they are cheap with 2 films and you can take in food or alcohol.
For me it is difficult as i only appreciate movies and most music from the 60s and 70s and early 80s- i even dress like mostly 70s with long hair and leather pants(nah no leather pants) and everything else i threw away like old bongs and those fuzzy posters but i wont cut my hair short. it really sucks because everyone has short hair. Last week i wanted to go to the movies with my girlfriend but there was nothing good to see.
So for me...um well the last movie i saw was the uh whats that guys name...Johnnny Cash and before that was Titanic which i couldnt wait to end///Too long to sit through, not to mention that thing he pulled with Christ's tomb....what ever happened to that?
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 07:49 PM you know outside of the US i think drive in movies are non existent, i have never seen one open in england in my whole life.
peace.

There aren't many around here anymore, but they are cheap with 2 films and you can take in food or alcohol. You have good prices on movie tickets. They're $9 per person here and again, so what? That isn't expensive! Going to a movie in Tokyo would be expensive! I have a 32 inch screen hooked up to the stereo and watch alot of movies that way. But films like The Queen, Children of Men, 300,and more are theater movies to me. Anything with Sandra Bullock or movies like "Disturbia" are DVD movies to me.
At home the phones ring, neighbors make noise, traffic noises, maybe thunder, loud stereos, my cat digging in her litter, etc all detract from the movie.
I love DVD's but nothing is the same as seeing it on the big screen with sound no home system can copy.

peace.Drive ins are almost extinct here. Mostly drunken bikers and the cops watching them go to the drive in now.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 07:54 PM you guys disgust me with your cheap economy, 7-9$ per ticket thats like £3-4
over hear we pay up to £15 per ticket in london, thats like $30 each in usd.
disgusting,
peace.
You actually do PAY those 15 quid per ticket?! Now that's just stupid! :D

disgusting,
peace. That is high but I'd still pay to see movies at the theater. No discount theaters though. THEY are the ones that are loud and dirty. I'd pay $30 to see a movie I waited for. And I'm a janitor!
You actually do PAY those 15 quid per ticket?! Now that's just stupid! :DUnless you enjoy going to the movies, like me.
I enjoy watching movies. In the comfort of my home. Without going anywhere.
I enjoy watching movies. In the comfort of my home. Without going anywhere.I get stir crazy and want out of my apartment. My grandparents are like that, they stay home insisting everything is too expensive.

i know im a dick.
peace.
i know im a dick.
peace.
nah, your not a dick. going to the movies is special. buying popcorn and raisinettes, then mixing them together, putting your arm around you woman, having her rest her head on your shoulder...falling asleep.
nah, your not a dick. going to the movies is special. buying popcorn and raisinettes, then mixing them together, putting your arm around you woman, having her rest her head on your shoulder...falling asleep. Some people would rather plop on the couch and count their savings. Sounds bloody boring to me!
yeah, i have to find a place where they show old movies.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 08:49 PM ya falling asleep, i tried to do that when we watched curse of the golden flower. but the seats are too small,
peace.
too small and how about the sticky floors?
too small and how about the sticky floors?I don't go to theaters with small seats or sticky floors.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 10:09 PM too small and how about the sticky floors?
the sticky floors i actualy dont mind :). because i like the sound it makes haha im not joking wierd i know.
people seriously have a problem with talking on there phones though, and once somebody brought a child into an adult movie and the kid was sooo noisy i nearly started shouting at the parent, then i thought no dont be big about this, and dont make more noise than they already are making, :)
peace.
EmptyForceOfChi 04-30-07, 10:11 PM we dont have jumbo seats here they are all "one size fits small". (that was good admit it)
people over hear are getting as fat as our american bretheren though, maybe we need to super size our seats.
peace.
nietzschefan 04-30-07, 10:51 PM AMC here for matinee is 18 CDN (that's like 15 U.S) for me and my womon. I only see good movies - used to go to nearly everything.
vslayer 05-01-07, 01:15 AM go to the movies? i already pay $50/month for dialup(bloody telecom with its mandatory line rental in order to get internet access) with which to download them, im not paying another $20/trip for fuel to travel into the city where i need to pay $5 for parking and $15 for tickets on top of that.
countezero 05-01-07, 01:21 AM I see maybe one movie in the theater per year. It takes a lot to tempt me to Mega-plex land, as it is infested with hordes of rude teenagers, boorish people on cell phones and fat people who can't stop eating.
Add to that, the fact that there aren't too many movies worth getting out to see these days and the improvement of home viewing equipment and Hollywood has a problem.
Generally speaking, I will only go to a theater to see the big effects films, which I know will suffer on my setup at home. However, so few big effects films are worth it nowadays, I find myself watching less and less of them. Pirates of the Caribbean 3? Give me a break...
Syzygys 05-01-07, 03:22 AM At home the phones ring, neighbors make noise, traffic noises, maybe thunder, loud stereos, my cat digging in her litter, etc all detract from the movie.
This must be one of the funniest list of non-problems.
You should probably move. The phone can be turned off, and my cat uses her litter box only twice a day. (not to mention it is in the basement)
Now, if the price of ticket were like in the UK, 20+ in US dollars, I would just buy the DVD. What is the price of a newly released DVD there?
Nikelodeon 05-01-07, 03:27 AM 20+ dollars? I've never paid more than £6 for a ticket. Usual price is around £5.
James R 05-01-07, 03:46 AM At current exchange rates, 6 pounds is about 15 dollars Australian.
EmptyForceOfChi 05-01-07, 03:07 PM 20+ dollars? I've never paid more than £6 for a ticket. Usual price is around £5.
if you go watch a movie anywhere in central london the cheapest you will find is about £12.
peace.

I just enjoy the theater, for movies that qualify as theater movies to me. LOTR? Theater movie, The Lake House? DVD ($20) 300? THEATER. Pursuit of Happyness? DVD.
I don't have a basement.:(

Well central London rips you off on everything.
