Who are the Friendliest people in the world and why?!I believe that the Latins are the most friendly..what do you think?

I think the northern Europeans. Iceland/Norway/Sweden/Denmark. They seem to be so relaxed, easy going and kind, while still refraining from being naive.

Latins? What latins?
If you are talking about mexicans I can't disagree hard enough.
I think maybe people from the carribean islands.
It seems whoever is the happiest is the most friendly. Living on a tropical island seems to make people happy for some reason :D

The nicest people I ever met were a group of Tibetin Monks that came to the local area to speak at some universities. They were in the area for three or four weeks and I had several opportunities to visit with them and talk, even had the opportunity to join them for diner. Very interesting group of people. Very peaceful, polite and considerate.

But it should be said that I have met nice people from many different nationality groups......and I have met some real a**holes from different nationality groups as well. So I guess it goes to say that it really doesn't depend on where a person comes from....

Liverpudlians. I will qualify that: Liverpudlians that still live in the community that they grew up in. Many have been moved away from Liverpool into over spill regions but I have always found that the Liverpudlian to be more than friendly, ever helpful and, in the between war years, looked out for each other very well.

French - not a chance in hell!

German - 25/75 against that thesis.

Indian Community in UK: very friendly. Worst in the UK: Pakistani

US Citizens: I have found them in the main, friendly people.

Canadians are generally rather friendly... But I dont think its something based upon whether someone has olive colored skin or not, it is what past the skin. The friendliest, kindest person I have met so far was french, she dressed gothic, wore spike bracelest and had a sword collecction. But she was the friendliest person I have ever met.

Also, priests tend to be rather at peace, and deeply religous people who arent focusing on the bad parts of the bible.

I think of the nicest people I've met, most were midwesterners.
First let me admit my own bias, being from the midwest, most of the people I've met have been from the midwest as well. Therefore the probablity that the nicest people I know are also the most common people I know is undoubtedly more a result of coincidence then fact. Perhaps more specifically, small town midwesterners, they seem to be the most laid back and the friendliest.
I have to say however, that all the french people I've ever met were rude and mean. I hope to be proved wrong on the subject however, since I minored in French in college I'd like to go there sometime.

Woah there seems to be a lot of what is that word? Racism, seems to strong but I suppose that It'll fit. Generally I would say that when comparing differing types of people I would say that certainly people who live in hamlets would be the nicest. Relaxed, eased, not troubled with a fast pace, not worried and virtuous, basically no nationality really decides it but virtue and nature.

This question actually is more complicated than you think. Friendly to whom? Americans? Canadians? I'd wager the French wouldn't be overly friendly to any American they meet in France.

I can't believe you dudes picked Swedes...

The people's one thing I won't miss much when I move to Barcelona next Tuesday... Like people say, depends on how you meet them. We're kickass at parties and to tourists, but in everyday life we just suck. We have a long-going tradition of "mind your own business and ignore everyone else", which can be nice on occasion but a lot of people just live by to the extreme.

The friendliest people in the world are those people who've had an unbelievably enjoyable childhood, full of motivation, encouragement, laughter, fun, and constant contact with other smiling, happy and enthusiastic people. As long as this trend continues for these people they are the friendliest on the planet.

Not to say that other people aren't friendly they are but this is what makes the most friendly people on the planet.

Most importantly they don't come from any one place, there are dickheads everywhere just the same as there are angels.

yes, i was a spoilt brat i had more friends in my early childhood than i can remember, so many toys, a great school and so on.
BUT the trend has not continued, family members die, friends leave, shit happens lets face it. So i'm not really all that friendly anymore, but i was!

basically i think the more you have been loved/liked the greater your ability to love and like other things. Same goes with hate.

the more friends you have had, the easier it is to be friends with people.

Nothing to do with being extroverted or introverted. there are mean extroverts are there not? case closed.

friendly people on this site are likely to make friends with other friendly people, people who are not friendly are obviously less likely to make friends, it does not rely upon whether we are being introverted or extraverted.

I think Americans are friendly but it is all on the surface (we don't really mean it). Its a disneyfied friendliness with no depth.

Scandinavians are relaxed but not really 'friendly', they are difficult to know but when one does get to know them they offer the best, most trustworthy, strongest friendships I have ever found. My closest friends for some reason are Danish.

I do think Carribean people are incredibly friendly and relaxed. I think its the weather and lifestyle. I mean when you grow up in communities where everyone is related and everyone helps each other survive it inspires genuine friendship.

I find Philipino's to be incredibly nice. Would give you the shirt off their back even if they have nothing.

The Irish (in Ireland) are amazing. The nicest, most accomodating and genuinely friendly people I have met while traveling.

Eastern Europeans are not friendly.

Well...so much for the generalizations.

I agree with IXLL77, there are many factors determining friendliness and we enter a hornets nest when we generalize about a nation of people. It all depends on how we approach others in their respective cultures and how we are perceived by them. In China for example, people will smile at you even while hating your guts, someone from the West might perceive this as friendliness when it is not. In France someone might bring you to their home lavish you with an incredible meal and good wine and then insult you and throw you out at the first minor diagreement.

Lucysnow
05-22-03, 03:39 AM
To SG-N who asked:

"Someone did it ?!"

I have seen it happen. Personally the most hairy experience I have had in France was during dinner in a nice restaurant with an American who was living in Paris. A waitress refused to bring white wine to our table because the main course was red meat. My friend became indignant (since he was paying) and began a heated argument with the waitress who left and came back with a very nice bottle of red wine...the most expensive in the house which had to be payed for of course. Then another time in Montpellier a very well dressed French woman tried to physically attack me while I was in a phone booth because I was on the phone too long (in her mind anyway). I was truly amazed...I mean in NY no one would attack you just like that (unless crazy) for fear you would be carrying a box cutter. I like the French precisely because of their erratic temperament. Emotionalism, everything expressed and enjoyed with too much feeling, like the Italians but without the puritanism.

But like I said before these are individual experiences which are then drawn into generalizations. There is no way to ascribe characteristics to an entire nation of people accurately because nations are made up of individuals. We bring ourselves to the table and make judgement but always forgetting to add ourselves into the equation.

SG-N
05-22-03, 04:26 AM
About the woman in Montpellier, I can't understand her behaviour ! In the name of the french majority : sorry. She should be put out of our country... :D
About the restaurant, that's different : I don't know where you were but I can understand her reaction. White wine with red meat, oh no ! She may tried to explained that it was not the good wine, but if your friend wanted a white one she should have give it. Anyway it depend on the restaurant... I understand that some "extremists cooks" could do such things even if I disagree (such as an artist that would see a client that change some colors to its paint)
:m:

Lucysnow
05-22-03, 04:37 AM
To SG-N:

I agree with what you said about the artist/cook. I think my friend was just pissed because (time for another generalization) as an American he is so used to getting what he pays for, what he demands is what he expects. Tompe...I love France even when I am being accosted!! I mean such style...you don't get accosted by any ole bag lady...No...its the woman with the Gucci bag!:)

I vote for the Thais. Here an example: Do you know those crowded parking spaces and underground parking lots? Well, in Thailand they are crowded as well. After every “ordinary” lot has been filled by a car, the new cars start parking lengthwise in front of those lots. Every driver is careful lot leave at least 50 cm space from bumper to bumper while doing so. No handbrake is applied and the gears are released. If one of those “shut off parked” cars wants to leave, the driver just pushes some of the lengthwise cars a few centimeters forward or backward until the gap is big enough to drive out of the parking lot. No fuss. No shouting, no scolding, no violence, no damaged cars.
Hope this demonstrates the way this nation is – I have seen this behavior all over Thailand.

See, New Yorkers may be racist, but the general public, in daily situations, is nice; primarily bc we have a mix of all nations, and heck knows where the person next to you is from, so we're all used to the diversity. Cubans who live in Florida

I was down there and pulled into a gas station to get directions. These two Cuban guys were filling up their van right next to us, so I asked them how to get on a certain highway. They explained it in broken english then went to get a map from their van. They spent about 10 minutes, went through 2 maps to tell me how to get on this highway. What nice guys, and I haven't met a Cuban that was an asshole yet.

In all serious I have heard that northern Europeans are very nice. I think just about anyone can be nice if your willing to trade with them.

the friendliest people in the world are the rural chinese

it seems the further you go into the wop-wops the more carefree and happy the local chinese become.

a few years back -- long before sars :D -- I was dragged along by my parents on part of a world trip into the middle of nowhere in china for reasons irrelvant to this story...

its amazing how friendly the people were. It was so easy to have jokes with the locals despite me speaking little chinese and them speaking almost no 'engrish'. having blonde hair also meant i was the 'best thing since peking duck' according to one man - which had me worried... very worried... but then again i probably lost nuances in the translation... ha.
We ended up being invited to dinner with a family who knew about six words of english between them (my mother knowning only some basic mandarin and cantonese and me even less but i was learning) but by the end of the night we had all laughed ourselves silly.

i just about spewed after tasting some meat and asking "moo?", guy shook his haid and said "woof woof" ...

:)

yes yes true. i love new york to pieces (can you tell???) and while it is better than nearly everywhere else in the country (world?) there are racists everywhere. my dad included. but he's old and grew up in queens when the only people there were the rich white people who moved out east from the city. it is still slightly segregated. there are rich white towns next to poor minority towns throughout long island and westchester. where else are the house staff going to live? but as far as diversity goes, i can't think of a single place that's better. i've met every kind of person there is out there (if i haven't, i can't think of any).

To Swedishfish: Yea well there are Archie Bunkers in all classes:)
NY has many ethnically entrenched neighborhoods as well as ethnically eclectic neighborhoods. There are wealthy blacks living in exclusive neighborhoods and poor whites living in Broad Channel. It offers everything high and low. I do agree racism is everywhere (not just in the States, not just black and white)

it'd Be my pleasure:D

Queens is the most diverse city in the world...not a opinion but a fact. Infact the Junior high school i went to was visited by Hillary Clinton and was voted as the most diverse school in the world with students from over 70 different countries attending classes there everyday.

What's amzing about Queens is the way it is setup....if you go from one end of Queens to another you'll feel as though you have been to two different countries. It is the largest borough and it is amazing to say the least. There are some bad areas in Queens and their are some really bad areas in Queens and then there are the good ones and then the real ritsy, snobby ones. There is no middle ground in Queens....you'll constantly find different stuff in Queens. There are also many race specific and nation specific ares there also....Jackson heights for one and part of China town.

The joke i made was about the area i reside in. You see i live near the border of Queens...where Long Island begins so the area i live in is a clean, well kept, superb living place and ofcourse when long island begins it even gets better so sometimes i joke that Queens is a poor mans long island.:D

Queens is a damn Latin colony :p take it from someone who lived in East Elmhurst for 2 years.

While I don't see NY as being racist, the racists you will find here are VERY radical. They also see the rest of America becoming like New York in 50 years, so they are fiercly loyal to the cause. Also, there are radical communists here. So the racists have to fight fire with fire. :)

New York is pretty segregated, though. There are white areas (Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge--where I live--, some parts of Staten Island, midtown manhattan), black areas (Harlem, Flatbush), Hispanic areas (Spanish Harlem, Bushwich, most of Queens), Jewish areas (Sheepshead Bay), Russian areas, Italian areas, & even Greek areas! Unfortunately, I don't know exactly where the last three are. I also think I might have confused some of the above areas, it's hard to keep track of many peoples.
You should see the looks I get when I take the train through a black or hispanic area.

Oh, and in some of those areas, it is possible to live for years without knowing English. In Bushwich, you only hear Spanish.

Oh, who are the friendliest peoples in the world?
I'd say the Irish.
Americans can be friendly, but I think that's because we were raised to be that way; a 'habit,' if you will. So American kindness is phony to me.
