Stryder 11-22-04, 08:14 PM Firstly if you are going to open your computer up to change parts you have either the option of spending out and getting all the proper equipment or just being careful with what you do without the equipment. You could spend money on a grounding mat, that contains a wrist attachment to ground the user however its a little extravagant for most (it's best left to mass assembly areas where customers require stability and particular Industrial Standards to be followed) The way I usually use is to first make sure that you have Removed the power leads to the box, this is because unplugging it might be okay however the cable can occasionally house a charge so it's best to remove the cable. Then once you have taken the cover off, make sure that you hold/touch the inside of the cage/box, namely the housing. If you do that you will lower the chances of any static being generated. Just don't open your box after dragging your socked feet across a nylon rug. :D It's also suggestible that you're careful with the screws within your computer, if you are lucky to have some money get some plastic coated "thumb" screws rather than ones that need a screwdriver for the casing (perhaps even inside the box). This is because most screwdrivers are made of a tensile steel while the screws aren't since they are created from a mould, this means screwing too tightly causes small flecks of metal from the screw to break off and can cause short circuits if they fall onto your motherboard. (Octagonal screwheads with the correct driver are better than the philips screwdriver type) Crunchy Cat 11-22-04, 10:45 PM perfect advice. |
