View Full Version : What's with the headrush?
visceral_instinct 06-03-08, 10:58 AM I've a fucking horrible *what I think is a virus* at the moment, and I get a headrush if I stand up too fast...what's the cause of that? I'm assuming to do with congestion messing with the balance mechanism in the ear?
Either really.. eat something.
visceral_instinct 06-03-08, 11:03 AM Why do viruses cause that?
I always get it if I've got a virus, otherwise I never do...

Hope you'll recover soon :)
visceral_instinct 06-03-08, 11:10 AM Thanks Enmos :)
I just self medicated with Red Bull...that worked pretty well :D
visceral_instinct 06-03-08, 11:29 AM :)
I love salt...a little addicted actually...saltwater in particular gives me an eerie, primordial feeling, like tasting the origin of life...
Yup...I'm strange
and thanks for your concern...:)
Orleander 06-03-08, 11:30 AM I had the same problem when I stood up quickly. My doctor told me it was low blood pressure and to eat more salt. It worked.
Yea, salt increases bloodpressure. That's why I suggested it to Visceral.
However, if there is a underlying cause for the low bloodpressure eating salt is just a temporary solution.. maybe even a bad one.. I wouldn't know.
visceral_instinct 06-03-08, 02:48 PM The only time I have it is when I've got a virus, or after 5X Red Bull has just worn off. :D
So I should be fine...

Red Bull contains a lot of caffeine..
Caffeine draws water from your body.
Also, when addicted to caffeine stopping intake can cause low blood pressure and headaches.
Maybe you stopped taking caffeine because of your illness ?
Michael 06-03-08, 06:23 PM The head rush is called vasovagal syncope (seen-ko-pee). Newtons (second?) law of motion? Things at rest tend to stay at rest, things in motion tend to stay in motion. The blood is at one level, you stand and it wants to stay at that level. So, the blood drains from your head. In order to keep it in your head, your blood vessels must constrict. If you smoke, then they are hardening from plaque build-up and and not functioning properly. If you are sick you may not have enough fluid in the vessels so drink more liquid.

No, I usually avoid caffeine because it leaches calcium from the body, but I was out with my mates and I'd just discovered it and I was like 'Oooo this tastes good' and I kept having more of it. I regretted that at 5am when the sugar crash kicked in. :D:D:D
I seem to be recovering, the headrush is still there but not as extreme as it was earlier...

Eeeek ! I didn't know that.. link ?
Drink only water for 30 days...do not eat anything...do not drink anything but water
And you will be healed.
visceral_instinct 06-04-08, 02:22 PM Eeeek ! I didn't know that.. link ?
Yeah, a bit of a balls, cos red bull is awesome stuff. You can dance until like 4am without getting tired. And it tastes lovely...
then again, not having diabetes is lovely too (there's upwards of 10 grams of sugar in it)
I'll find a link...wait a while...

It is like touching heaven while still reaching for Earth.
visceral_instinct 06-04-08, 02:33 PM I didn't even know it was addictive..unless you're very high on the bell curve and you can get mind altering effects from it...
It is like touching heaven while still reaching for Earth.
Not exactly.
Not exactly.
or drowning into the depth of an ocean upside down to the evershining glistering light of an underwater world below while rope from above still holds you to the reality.
Detox symptoms:
Symptoms can last anything from a few days to about a week - depending on how much caffeine you were consuming. About 12 hours after stopping, these are the symptoms you can expect:
* Headache
* Fatigue
* "Bad mood"
* Depression
* Irritability
* Difficulty keeping concentration
* Flu-like symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and muscle pain.

I want to add tunnel vision, it's unreal.
I read somewhere else that with some people detox can cause more serious problem that can last for months.
Enmos...have you ever tried to swim vertically down upside down position? Try it...

I passed out from one of those head rushes once and fell down a flight of stairs.
visceral_instinct 06-04-08, 03:12 PM Fucking Christ!!! That's disturbing.
And I thought it was just harmless stuff to give you energy...
I'm definitely less fond of Red Bull now.
Enmos:
'Caffeine (and theophylline) can freely diffuse into cells and causes intracellular calcium release (independent of extracellular calcium) from the calcium stores in the endoplasmic reticulum(ER). This release is only partially blocked by Ryanodine receptor blockade with ryanodine, dantrolene, ruthenium red, and procaine (thus may involve ryanodine receptor and probably some additional calcium channels), but completely abolished after calcium depletion of ER '

well have you not felt those symptoms you yourself described? ( Dont hold the nose while swimming down, swim upside down with tilted axis of the center of body mass...for 1 minute...

Have you ever had a massive headache accompanied with extreme nausea and imbalance not unlike when you're drunk, while viewing the world through a smoke-filled straw ?
Have you ever had a massive headache accompanied with extreme nausea and imbalance not unlike when you're drunk, while viewing the world through a smoke-filled straw ?
well yes...except no "smoke filled" being involved.
one_raven 06-04-08, 03:19 PM Have you ever had a massive headache accompanied with extreme nausea and imbalance not unlike when you're drunk, while viewing the world through a smoke-filled straw ?
Those suck.
visceral_instinct 06-04-08, 03:21 PM Have you ever had a massive headache accompanied with extreme nausea and imbalance not unlike when you're drunk, while viewing the world through a smoke-filled straw ?
Nope...never...the most effect I'll get from caffeine is more energy than usual...
Yep.. I have a similar reaction to nicotine detox.. except no nausea and less imbalance :(
Both only happen once or twice though. I may have been tired then too..
Nope...never...the most effect I'll get from caffeine is more energy than usual...
I get NO effect from caffeine. I sleep fine on loads of caffeine.
visceral_instinct 06-04-08, 03:29 PM I've done that, when I was really tired. I had some coffee and I was like 'shit this will keep me awake...' but nope, I was fine.
Never have caffeine while on a raging adrenaline high, though. I once had some Red Bull after going mountain biking. Didn't sleep until circa 3am.
visceral_instinct 07-28-08, 05:52 PM I got that head rush after doing lateral pull downs in the gym earlier...why? O_O
Steve100 07-29-08, 04:10 AM I love head rushes.
I went to the doctor because mine seemed pretty frequent, but he told me everything was normal. Could be the same for you.
YAY.

Vis, it never occurred to me that you might be unaware of the amount of caffeine Red Bull contains..

Wtf ? You like headrushes ?

I know NOW how much it contains. Didn't bother to look on the can at the time, I was too busy laughing with my mates and fucking around (I mean fucking around as in being an idiot and having fun, not fucking around as in having promiscuous sex...sadly.).
and the head rush is kinda cool, just as long as you know there's no dangerous underlying cause.

Define "head rush", because I think we're talking about different things here.
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 07:02 AM that thing where when you stand up too fast, you feel theblood drain from your head and you get visual distortion/tunnel vision?
that thing where when you stand up too fast, you feel theblood drain from your head and you get visual distortion/tunnel vision?
It's like almost passing out. You think that's a nice feeling ?
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 07:06 AM Ya, so long as you don't ACTUALLY pass out. O_O
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 07:08 AM do you know why you can get a head rush after doing lateral pull downs? O_O
Same reason you get one when you stand up too fast ?
Spud Emperor 07-29-08, 07:14 AM Meh...
Hey, I gotta go eat something, talk to you later :)
Too funny!
V.I peaking and troughing at breakneck speed whilst Enmos and Spud plod laboriously through middle age.
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 11:32 AM peaking and troughing?
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 11:33 AM I know you are talking about waveforms, but...why?
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 01:36 PM Oh, I just got a good one, had been sitting on the floor for a while. :D
Oh, I just got a good one, had been sitting on the floor for a while. :D
I hope you don't mind me saying this but maybe you should see a doctor..
Do you have nosebleeds often ?
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 01:41 PM Nope. Only gotten a nosebleed 2 times, once from a punch, once in a moshpit.
Nope. Only gotten a nosebleed 2 times, once from a punch, once in a moshpit.
Hmm I asked because you seem to get headrushes quite easily.
It can indicate low blood pressure.
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 01:46 PM Why would you get nosebleeds from low blood pressure?
Why would you get nosebleeds from low blood pressure?
It's one of those things I picked up somewhere.
As I can't seem to find any reference to it online it is most likely wrong.
Thanks for being critical :)
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 01:57 PM No problem. :)
Would my liking for Red Bull have anything to do with getting headrushes easily? O_O
No problem. :)
Would my liking for Red Bull have anything to do with getting headrushes easily? O_O
Hrm.. caffeine does cause higher blood pressure.
This I know.. :p
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 02:19 PM Wouldn't that mean caffeine would act against the headrush, not cause it? O_O
So caffeine would prevent 'em, not cause them?
I don't know.. I read somewhere (while looking for evidence that low bloodpressure causes nosebleeds) that high blood pressure can also cause dizziness.
But never mind really..
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 02:22 PM I haven't had any today though...I was a good girl and stayed away from what my mum not so ironically calls 'Essence of Diabetes' :D
It's not actual dizziness though, just a headrush specifically when standing.
Meh.
CharonZ 07-29-08, 04:28 PM Headrush from standing are almost always caused by low blood pressure. Or more generally it takes a bit longer for the blood circulating efficiently again, after you have sit (or lie) down (blood settles down and the flow has to increase when you stand up).
Caffeine may let your heart pump faster and thus let it flow better again. But although it is not a diuretic (as it was believed) a number of conditions (like Morbus Meniere) have been associated with extreme caffeine consumption.
visceral_instinct 07-29-08, 05:02 PM I don't get that much caffeine. O_O
visceral_instinct 07-30-08, 10:36 AM And ya, probably that. I had a can of Red Bull earlier, haven't had a headrush at all.
visceral_instinct 08-20-08, 06:24 PM My mum says you can get headrushes from having too much adrenalin in yer system. Why would that be?
My mum says you can get headrushes from having too much adrenalin in yer system. Why would that be?
I doubt adrenalin alone can do that.
CharonZ 08-21-08, 12:13 PM No it would be a secondary effect of adrenaline, of course. But it would be quite different as in this case the the blood flow would be increased, so the rush would be kind of the reverse from what was initially described.
visceral_instinct 08-21-08, 01:07 PM So it would be the "comedown" from the adrenalin?
So it would be the "comedown" from the adrenalin?
