Amy Winehouse was a substance abuser. Margaret Spelling was Education Secretary. Local landscaping equipment shop owner had last name of Gardner. Please be kind and thoughtful in naming.
I hope I don't seem unkind but coincidences like that a pretty common. On the other hand, I know a guy named Baker who is a auto mechanic, one named Cooper that has nothing to do with barrels and there are probably thousands named Smith who's occupations have nothing to do with their names either. The subject is sort of amusing, though - wish I had one to contribute. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
New Scientist used to run the odd paragraph or two on Nominative Determinism in its Feedback column at one time. Usually a very amusing read. Edit: James beat me to it...
I agree about coincidences. But that doesn't mean there isn't a psychological effect with at least subtle influence.
I would *strongly* disagree with that. A person's family name wouldn't have any effect on their lives unless it's something they might be ashamed of (and they can always change it) or perhaps have some serious mental defect that drives them compulsively by causing them to believe it's "their" destiny or some other such foolishness.
My wife noted a Professor Dingus in mechanical engineering... One of the funnier uses of a last name she'd seen was a fellow with a trash-hauling business in what's an historic black neighborhood...a mr. White. She always smiled really big to see his truck. It said: "White Trash Hauling." For those of you who are Southern USA-Vernacular challenged... when you hear "white trash," think " chav." My last name translates as brewer...and honestly? who has not thought about making their own mead or hard cider at home?
Usain Bolt is as fast as lightning. The head of transport in London used to be called Rick Shaw. Suzie Salmon was gutted like a fish.
Dweezil Zappa is proud of his name and fought to keep it: The only Timmy I know is the one on "South Park" and he's in no danger of growing up anytime soon. Mrs. Fraggle bought me a "Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld" t-shirt and musicians all recognize it and crack up when they see it.
I'm glad he likes it 'cause I wouldn't want it. I like plain names that don't have any inherent significance. It may be boring in a way, I guess, to look at it that way. I recall a story of someone being named Van because he was born in a van.
That's pretty much what I mean. A name may be that one thing that takes a person over the top. I still think that if I had a name that has some meaning in some way or another that it would affect my behavior at least somewhat. It would be cruel, in my opinion to name a boy Doofus. If I had the last name Baker, it would make me think of bakers at some times, and that could be enough subtle influence to alter the course of my actions. I'm not saying I believe anything supernatural is going on though.
I talk a lot about this . I call it the red car phenomena. Where as you buy a red car and then as a result you see more red cars . You might say to your self , There are more red cars than there use to be . Awareness by association . So I would say people are naturally gravitated to the sound of there name . Somethings may be obvious when it comes to your choices . I believe your subconscious picks up on the inflection of sound that are similar to what I call your root existence ( your name for example ) It is most familiar. So association to it is a natural draw for your mind . You may think you made the choice when in fact it could be the back ground noise that directed you to the conclusion . So it is my belief that you are seriously influenced by your name and names others call you . Not just that but by similar sounds as your name. Like Bob , slob, rob, cob, snob , hob and so forth . I believe it signals a response good or bad , It may be rejected are accepted, but non the less it triggers a heightened awareness to the subject matter at hand there by influencing the directive . Sticks and stones may brake your bones and so do the names you are called. You can act like you are not affected , but I think you can not help but be affected . It becomes part of your over all existence. Can you alter the effect ? Yes , by other stimulus that counters the effect . Like if it is predominate that expressions say "Bob is a dink" you have to physically counter act the statement with a new statement or you will start to believe "Bob is a dink" and there by be influence by the peripheral dominate noises . Can you rise above the conditioning ? Yes you can . Tit for tat , but first you have to be aware of what is causing the feeling and making you act . O.K. this goes to Me Idea of the secret language that abounds in day to day living . Uncontrolled mood swings, Blow ups and what have you . Reaction to the out side influences of day to day sound . I suggest ear training in your life to confirm this or dismiss it . Maybe not all are subject to phenomena. You won't know until you ear train to hear what is going on day to day coupled with your behavior. Or maybe it is just Me .
mom would say 'What is wrong with you?', dad would say 'Think!'..guess what i spend most time thinking about... doesn't help when everyone you ever met keeps asking 'What is wrong with you?'.. I could be ok with being messed up, but that statement is usually followed by a disassociation, IDK maybe it is contagious....it leaves me to fend for myself..anyway..i think i can be done crying now.. I am not as messed up as you think i am,I am not as messed up as I think i am,i am still messed up,that is human nature, can i be proven to be messed up enough to get disability?..dunno..scared to.. yes,but not by yourself. conditioned response(feel that way cause that's the way one felt the first time it happened) now every time it happens it reminds of the first(worst?) time it happened. hehe.. MEPS; feel......ouch! think....he just hurt me. know....i felt this way before. believe..did he mean to hurt me? (out of order, but there could be many answers that fit)
