View Full Version : What is your educational background?
Ok posters, time to show off your smarts. Show us all why we should give your side of an argument more credibility than the other.
That is, tell us how experienced you are in the realm of academia!
Just for fun, but it might be insightful...;)
I have a BS in physics
MS in post modern physics
Ph.D in quantum physics
Ph.DD in astro physics
'Smarts' as you put it should have no relevance to posters views or what they say. I, for example, have a knowledgable view of the Second World War, but I have no peice of paper to say that I do.
So if I was to post something about the Second World War and it was all true, but saying I don't have a peice of paper to say that I am knowledgable of that field so my views are wrong would be pure obsurdity.
But I'm not implying that this is what this thread is about though
I currently have :-
12 GCSE's at grades B-C
Advanced Basketball Certificate
And a Junior Gold Swimming Certificate :)
I am currently studying :-
AS English Law
AS Psychology
AS Computing and
Archery
Bebelina 12-16-02, 11:01 AM Wow Joeman, how come you still know so little..? Just kidding. :D
I have no education to mention, all I do is to make uneducated guesses. :D
I have studied philosophy and now drama at the university, taken some art classes and other short courses at different educational institutes.
Thor,
but saying I don't have a peice of paper to say that I am knowledgable of that field so my views are wrong would be pure obsurdity
You're right. However, having a piece of paper will better support your claim...especially if you are applying at a university for a position as a professor.
As for me:
I'm a dumb U.S. Marine.
I'm the Comptroller Chief for Marine Security Guard Battalion, where they train the Marines that guard the U.S. Embassies. I handle the budget of a mere $40 mil. I'm small time.
Right now, going to school for a BSBA. Might change to BSEE. No, I don't want to work with money for the rest of my life (except mine, that is ;) ). I'm a curious person. Engineering interests me. Nuff said! :D
I have BSEE. I am a MSEE dropout. I got really bad grades and was put on double secret probation.
I am going back to finish it in January.
wesmorris 12-16-02, 11:17 AM BSIE (Industrial Engineering) from the University Of Missouri. I started out as BSEE and well, hehe.. I'm familiar with double secret probation. I realized that IE was more suitable to my skillset and was pretty successful at it once I was allowed to return to the University. Army Veteran, Two combat patches, no combat experience (was in Panama and Saudi). I was a Radio and Television systems specialist in the army. I'm currently the Quality Manager of a small contract manufacturing firm in Columbia, MO.
You're a busy person, Joeman!
If it weren't for the invention of computers (and computer games :o ), I might devote more time to my education.:(

Computer games are far more addictive than sex or any drugs out there. I have read a few court cases which computer game is put down as a reason for divorce. I also have friends who drop out of college because they are addicted. Unfornately I don't think there is any cure. You just have to stop buying new ones.
I'd have to agree Joeman. Video games can consume 4+ hours of your life and you would think it was 30 minutes. That's why I've cut back considerably in the gaming department. As for my qualifications:
AAS in Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology - I currently work in the Inventory Control department of AMD and handle millions of dollars worth of product everyday. Sucks when I break something :p .
I'm still working on my bachelors in Economics. Seems like forever but at least I'll finish one day.
...and was put on double secret probation
what is that?
EvilPoet 12-16-02, 12:20 PM Nothing much to speak of really - I have a
degree from the School of Hard Knocks. :)

lol, j/k.
I was stuck in 4 years of "gifted" with one year of "part-time gifted" before. (LoOk WhAt It DiD tO mE!!! *twitch*) I took a year in the USA, and was in a private school between the ages of 3 and 4. My skull's not fully closed, like a child, because my father's wasn't closed entirely as well. He was a very intelligent man. Whether this enhances the same ability to store information and build new neurons, or increases the likelihood of bursting veins in anger, I do not know.
3 years of guitar
5 years of swimming + Rookie thingie and Bronze Medallion
Made it to the newspapers
Was on TV :D ("Bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they come for you?..lol)
Junior Achievement "graduate" (if you can call it that)
Tied for 1st in Mathematics competition
Got ribbons for various Track and Field events
Honour student
"Best Linguist" award. heh. *gags*
2nd best soccer team award ribbon. Damn straight!
Proud owner of a certificate in archery! :D Apparently, all it basically says is that I didn't shoot anyone that day. Hooray!...:bugeye:
(what else...?)
My average last year was 92%. Straight A's..until this year! ARGGHH!!! *emits low growling, and threatens to maul anyone who has a higher average*
_blue% :m:
middle school graduate
the rest was redundant
Nightpoet 12-17-02, 01:23 AM Right now I'm taking Humanities, which apparantely makes me smarter than everyone else at the University (so they tell me), but I'm not stickin with it.
Basically, I'm just really opinionated :D
SoLiDUS 12-17-02, 03:25 AM I graduated high school! :D
I have a college degree in Police Foundation! :D
Yes, I know the latter is garbage... the blame goes on me for
being lazy. See, this is what happens when you don't give a
damn and don't study to get the grades: I had to complete a
couple of math classes to go in Computer Science in January:
all classes I could've done in high school.
:(
In one simple sentence: me is no background educational thingy.
;)
Microzoft 12-17-02, 03:33 AM I have not schooling, nothing on authentic paper to probe ….But!
-I never touched drugs
-I have travel the world, lived in 13 countries
-Speak five languages
-Hold many senior positions in technology industry
-Conducted seminars at several Universities
-Written many technical papers
-Rubbed shoulders with kings and presidents
-Reasonable in martial arts
-Learned to fly planes and scuba dived to 200 feet.
-Saved lives
-Participated in manifestations against capitalism and alike.
..and a dozen of other interesting things, including
having worked in Itaq.
I like to participate in sciforums because I consider my contribution
to be of educated views, ..because;
- Speaking language allows me to know/understand what other
cultures do & think.
- having been in many countries allows me to identify w/them.
- Been in Muslim world, I can better understand their basics
- Been with rich and powerful allows me to relate.
- Been with the poor I can relate with the other side.
However, if the monitors of this forum continue neglecting their activity instead of maintaining it within certain constructive guide lines, …I’m slowly getting the feeling that some of us are wasting our time.

Neville 12-17-02, 05:17 AM And why does this matter original poster?? Someone could have read loads of books and have no formal qualification yet could have more knowledge thasn someone with a degree! By microzoft:
-I never touched drugs
And this proves...?? You have neevr touched drubgs so you know how bad they are then right? When your kids ask you about drugs you can say "yeah kids drugs are bad." and they will say "why are they dad?" and you can say ".... Well...i dont know ive just heard that they are"
Yes very smart! Experience gives you knowledge. It is also true that age doesnt necceasarily give you expereince: experiences give you experience.
Microzoft 12-17-02, 06:19 AM Oh, ..I see
You may be one of those few persons that (excuse my example to make the point);
Eat shit in order to know that eating shit can give you indigestion?
Get drunk so that your children will know the effects of alcohol abuse?
Crash your car to point out the need for the seat belt?
Whom are you going to shoot to make the point on firearms danger?
…Get the point?
……you are not working by nay chance in some atomic lab, are you??
I wonder if you were not in drugs, if you would have formulate your question in same manner?
And why does this matter original poster?? Someone could have read loads of books and have no formal qualification yet could have more knowledge thasn someone with a degree!
Have you seen Good Will Hunting? The main character was kind of like what you described. He was also a genius.
It is true to a certain extent that most geniuses don't have much common sense, or street smarts. Are you suggesting that they don't realize how important a degree is? Are you suggesting that 4 or more years of higher learning isn't beneficial? Yes, some people who have degrees are morons. But, I'm sure they were worse before they went to college. :D
Captain_Crunch 12-17-02, 09:45 AM studying bs(c) quantity surveying and i hate it. :( thinking of changing course next year.

Shadow Decker 12-17-02, 12:40 PM For all those unclear on how to pronounce the word drug here is an example provided by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?drug0001.wav=drug)
Fukushi 12-17-02, 07:21 PM "Every education teaches a philosophy; if not by dogma then by suggestion, by implication, by atmosphere. Every part of that education has a connection with every other part. If it does not all combine to convey some general view of life, it is not an education at all."
G.K. Chesterton
Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby "schooled" to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is "schooled" to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavour are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question.
Ivan Illich Deschooling Society (1973: 9)
I go with that, oh and by the way: I'm an autodidact
I'm going to get my grade sometime, wich means going back to school,....... again.

If the needle was fluctuating between 160 and 180 - that means you had constipation... next time drink some fluid so that you dont have to strain so much...:D
spuriousmonkey 12-18-02, 03:00 AM IQs are nice, but the real function of the brain is to use it, not to test it.
and my IQ is nowhere near 180 and still i manage to live

this is either a brilliant humurous statement, or the IQ test failed to pass the IQ test of IQ tests.
Merlijn 12-18-02, 03:24 AM Let me guess....
160-180 was with an internet IQ test. and you would have to pay $20 to get a print-out?

Slacker47 12-20-02, 01:46 AM Im still in high school. Being in high school, I would have to say that it is ones aspiration to learn, not the credentials that go along with school. Remember that schools teach biased information. Forums like this don't fuck around.
I took my history final today and one of the questions was wrong, so I took the liberty to embarass my teacher. I love opporitunity.
I am just a child....of the Universe...
My entire life is a learning process...
Any time I wish to learn something academic...I go out to the University bookstore and buy the textbook on the subject and read them...
