What is that?

The other day, I went for a walk, and at the side of the country road, there were several formations of what seemed to be larvae. A few of the formations were just spoonful heaps, one larvae climbing upon another. One was like a big worm, a thousand small larvae moving like one organism. A few formations were shaped as circles: larvae upon larvae, going in circles. With a straw, I discontinued one circle to see what would happen -- and they patched it up!

The larvae were about 5 mm long and 1 mm in diameter, grey and with black heads. Between these, there were a few much bigger white ones, about 10 mm long and 3 mm in diameter.
The bigger circles were about 10 cm in diameter, the smaller one about 5 cm. The flow of the larvae in them was about 1 cm in diameter.

What was that, and how come they were in such formations?

Thanks for your input.

hmm, perhaps they were mating? maybe if you get a picture, people would be able to help more.

Yes, a photo would be nice -- but they were gone by the next day.

hmm, maybe you should look up seasonal larvae, and find which one normally mates this time of year. also, you could go back a few times and see if there are large numbers of moths in the area all of the sudden.

in what region do you live?

is there a local library that you could get a book about bugs from? that might help.
