View Full Version : What got you into scifi?
guthrie 11-08-03, 01:45 PM What books, films or tv got you into sci-fi? And why? feel free to discuss what makes a good intro and why to scifi.
Me, it was books. Two in particular stand out.
Arthur C Clarkes "Islands in the sky". A boy, teenager, wins flight anywhere in the world, he chooses the lo earth orbit training station. Little action in the standard sense, but interesting situations. Hard scifi all the way through.
"The jupiter Project" by Gregory Benford. Its essentially partly a coming of age story about someone whos 16 or 17, living in a space station orbiting Jupiter with his parents and a whole host of scientists. Again, its hard science all the way, except at the end where it gets a little soft, but its a godo read. interesting characters, angst, and well worth reading.
caffeine_fubar 11-08-03, 02:21 PM Books..... and mostly thinking. My mind wanders about, stumbling across things i can think of differently. A good example is god and evolution. Hehe
guthrie 11-08-03, 02:27 PM welcome to sciforums!
yes, mind wandering is a good one. Do you find that theres not enough dicussion and exploration of god and evolution outside sci-fi?
CounslerCoffee 11-08-03, 03:43 PM ....my Dad.
Every weekend when I first woke up, my dad would be in control of the TV. He would watch ST:TOS, Space 1999, and Lost in Space. Oh man, that Smith, how I remember how evil he was, and obviously gay now.
Hearing the original Star Trek theme song reminds me of my Dad, and mornings in my old house before my parents divorced.
Of course after the divorce I got to see him every weekend, where we watched ST:TNG, and then ST:V, and then B5, and then X-Files, etcetera.
It's my Dad that's turned me into what I am today; a moderator of an online forum that goes to movies the day they're released, the day a Neil Gaiman book comes out, I record all scifi shows and watch them at my leisure; I'm there because I love it and I want it all.
Note: My Dad does not share the same passion for Farscape that I do. He prefers SG:1.
Pollux V 11-08-03, 03:49 PM My parents rented The Empire Strikes Back when I was little, really little, and the rest is history.
sargentlard 11-08-03, 04:13 PM Power Rangers........i can't believe i am saying this but Power Rangers got me into sci-fi.....but it was good back then.
buddhafish 11-08-03, 04:17 PM what got me into sci fi.. in general, i'd say just an interest in astronomy, but what got me interested in good sci fi would definitely have to be 2001: a space odyssey.
:m: that which can be explored, should be explored :m:
cosmictraveler 11-08-03, 06:21 PM The movies, War Of The Worlds and Forbidden Planet, both released back in the 50's and they were far far ahead of their times!
Pollux V 11-08-03, 07:17 PM Power Rangers was the fuck.

curioucity 11-09-03, 10:24 AM GAMES!!!
(okay, hyper-reactive, but whatever...)
Star Wars, 1979. I became more familiar with "hard" science fiction in the mid-90's reading Arthur C. Clarke, Charles Sheffield and others.
It's pretty great that we're in the middle of such a sci-fi boom.
Tristan 11-09-03, 12:54 PM Astronomy :)
guthrie 11-09-03, 01:53 PM Umm, Walker, a sci-fi boom?
I thoguht theyd cancelled farscape and babylon five is finished and start treks not worth talking about, and I cant find many new authors on the bookshelves. At least the film industrys doing a few things.

Yeah dude. I use to wake up at 7 in the morning to watch them and when they would have special episodes with the Green ranger on I would go crazy with excitement. It was my first sci-fi experience and I followed the show till 6th grade. Who was the new White Ranger was all me my chums discussed on the schoolyard........
......*sigh*....god i was fucking pathetic as a child
guthrie:
hey, when I was a kid, we didn't even HAVE a sci-fi channel, okay? :P
I just mean there's a lot of good movies and such coming out these days. Novels, too.
Hmmm...I guess I kinda always had a knack for it. Ninja Turtles got me into biology. Biology got mt into star wars. My old cartoon roots got me into anime. It all comes together somehow. Well, mabye in my mind. OOOHHHOOOHHH, SEcret of the Ooze. Loved that movie!!
not only scifi, but lord of the rings, too. he bought me a really nice copy of the hobbit (with illustrations by alan lee) for my 10th b-day. and a 7-book boxed set of the lord of the rings the year after that.
but scifi? hmm... i DID watch power rangers... didn't know that was scifi at the time... after all i WAS, like, 5. let's see... dad got me into stargate, now i'm an SG-1 freak...
dad got me to read dune...
dad supports my geekiness while mother sighs and wishes she had a normal daughter with a normal social life that would just get some normal friends and go to the mall or something -wha? what? oh... right...
