I'm wondering.. because people always ask me that. I tell them a lot of people tell me that, but I don't know. Today I told someone my IQ, which is 142(I think I mistakenly said 135 on this site previously), but I don't think he knows how high that is because he just said yeah and stopped talking. So what do you guys say?

They never ask, they just say I'm smart. I deny it because I know there are much smarter people than me. I think the person who says it is just flirting with me.

I tell 'em that If I was smart I'd be sitting on the deck of my yacht sipping martinis while my Fresh-bought hotsy-totsy sex-slaves jello-wrestled for the priviledge of giving me a pedicure.

    Nossireebobhowdyvern, I tell 'em...

    I'm the dumbest man alive.

I've never been asked other than in a passing sort of way. But if I was, I'd say that I'm average but have a fair advantage over a lot of people by having gotten an excellent education and many years of intense, interesting experiences.

And that first part is exactly why you will see me telling so MANY people that they need to stop posting nonsense and go get an education! They would be much, much better off and would stop looking like such dummies. (Being smart is of NO advantage unless someone has knowledge to go along with the brains.)

Knowledge is of NO advantage unless someone has intelligence, imagination, patience, tolerance, logic & an open mind to go along with it.

You don't want them to get an education - you want them to get an indoctrination. :deal:

Yes, that's true also. But speaking in general terms, someone who IS smart usually has those qualities as well. However, it's all to common to find them lacking in education/knowledge - possibly because they ARE so smart that they think they don't need it. (We've got several examples of that running around in these forums. People with reasonable intelligence but little knowledge.)

It's no more common than people with degrees but little intelligence.
I suspect our concepts differ as to reasonable intelligence.

    I just laugh.

Weirdly, EVERYONE seems to think I'm intelligent...maybe cos I read a lot and learn loads of obscure words...

Wait, I tested as intellectually gifted...dang. Maybe if I deny it, it'll go away.

There's NO such things as people with degrees and little intelligence - that's just a popular myth spread BY people with little intelligence. There are people with degrees that are lacking in some areas of 'common sense' but that's another matter altogether.

i don't believe i was ever asked if i was smart.
if someone did ask though, i would do the smart thing and say no.
i've been told i was intelligent and bright.
    gratuitous ego massage.
    about what?

I often get asked if I know what the words I'm saying mean exactly. Then people either go "oh" or some jock/cheerleader bullshit type comment. I would expect that in high school but after 19-20 years of age? Get a grip, it's never a disadvantage to know something, to be smart, quick thinking, whatever.

It's pure jealousy, because these people actually do know this, you may have an advantage over them and they don't like it.
