When we think, most of us invoke a "conscious voice", we think like we read, more or less.

This thinking process can vary quite a lot speed-wise. You think a lot faster and less "vocally", when faced with a dangerous situation. You tend to slow the thinking process down when relaxed, etc.

What is that inner voice we invent, and why do we do it?
Is it because we need to "talk" in order to consider ideas, so we invent this "person who talks", inside our brain? Like an advisor of sorts, our conscience?

Do we listen to other kinds of sounds that we invent this way?
What about when thinking of a tune or a song, and replaying it from memory? We can recall probably almost any kind of sound we've heard and remembered.
We invent an inner world of sounds and an inner voice to refer to, sort of a reflection of how we deal with others (in terms of a voice), and with the world.

We can recall scenery too, or a painting (maybe not a page of text), but noises and natural sounds, music and speech, are more detailed than visual memories (in my case, at least).

So does our mind or brain actually make "noise"? Is the audio-visual system as capable because we're "tuned" that way?
Humans have a highly developed audio-visual subsystem, which I would say makes up the largest part in terms of all the senses, of our conscious and unconscious experience.

I believe it's possible to hear your brain "working"; that you can tune in (via the inner ear) to the background, which must be the actual activity of the audio-visual cortex, mapped back to the external auditory system, a kind of feedback that forms a basis for external auditory experience.

Rather than a simple passive setup, where the audio-visual system is activated by external sound/light, and inactivated otherwise.
    It just makes more sense.

Try putting earplugs in sometime, and seeing if you can "hear" anything. If so, where is the "sound" coming from if your ears are blocked?

P.S. Thought I'd add something to the pile of wacko ideas and notions circulating through the forum. Wotchu think?

I do sometimes think as slowly as that and use a voice of intuition, sometimes yodas sometimes an old chinese guy, sometimes the voice of gandalf from the LOTR movies.

But normaly I think alot faster and it's more like those shots in the matrix where data just flies and ticks past on the screen. I will kind of flick through my thoughts in a matter of split seconds and know the outcome of my intuition.

    peace.

You've never heard any internal noises, other than the ones you consciously create?

I'd think it is more thoughts that you are experiancing than actual sounds because sounds eminate from the outside of your head inward but thoughts start inside of your mind.

Another person who has never heard "noises" inside their head?

They definitely don't come from outside, I don't think them into existence, and I've always had them - transient pings and pongs, a lot like those hearing tests, but clearer. They just "appear" and fade away over a handful of seconds. No pattern, just occasional noises.

    Not something you know about?

    I don't think I've ever had them.

Tinnitus is the only sort of thing like that I've experienced.

Oh, you mean hearing problems caused by the malfunctioning inner ear? Many people have that problem including me. I misunderstood your question, excuse me.:wallbang:
