Does training for a career in science count? ;) I figure it does, the US needs more scientists and less people in the service industry.

Paying taxes so that Israel can remain afloat and making sure the war on Iraq keeps moving toward the abyss.

I took in two homeless people, fed them, helped them find jobs, dental care.
I volunteered to show autistic kids around my workplace a couple times.
I pick up litter when I go hiking.
I saved a couple people with my portable car starter, even coming to the rescue of a cop to clear a stalled car from an intersection.
And I rescued a stray cat.

I teach people how to build software better so everyone doesn't have to be so frustrated with computers. I teach foreigners how to speak and write English better so they can work more productively and fit into our culture. I have letters to the editor printed that point out things that need to be fixed with our society. I raise sweet puppies that make people's lives happier. I play music that makes them want to dance.

I pick up litter when I go hicking...

How, exactly, does one go "hicking"? Do you dress up in overalls with a straw
hat, boots and no shirt then wander around saying "howdy, howdy, howdy..."?

;) Peace.

I am supporting politicians who are smart and responsible, and who have the right priorities in mind — namely, civil rights, the environment, and a proper handling of the unfair mess the Bush administration has gotten us into. I am also voicing my concerns about the state of the union, our culture, our attitudes, and other things relevant to society.

I reuse, reduce, and recycle.
I try to use things like water and energy efficiently not wastefully.
I go to the polls and vote.
Though i dislike contributing funds for the politicians to waste I pay the taxes.
Whenever I can I try to do random acts of kindness if possible anonymously.

Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you. :P

I'm not going to serve our military, but at the same time, I'm also not going to be an arm-chair general by saying, "our troops NEED to be deployed there" or "we need a troop surge".

95% of all arm-chair generals are too chicken to serve in the military or will LIE to people by saying they served in the military, like many people in this forum. Of course, they'll quote a unit they served in, but that can be easily googled.

spidergoat

That's stupid, terryoh. Only military veterans can make judgements on troop deployment? No, it's our sons and daughter, our taxes going over there, we as citizens have an equal say to the former military.

Being in the military isn't everything. My friend was in the army for years, knows nothing about politics or the international situation, and all he did in the army was drive experimental armored personnel carriers.

I run an activist group trying to bring affordable telecommunications into South Africa to help in the education of the next generation.

South Africa has the highest telecoms rates in the world and over 85% of our population can not afford basic telecoms. This is having a massive social and economic impact on my country.

I will give you two examples. The Department of Trade and Industry said that our telecoms rates cost us the business of 32 transnational corporations... these are companies that wanted to set up head office here. All those in just one year.

If we had comparable call rates to say... ohh... Mozambique (a pretty trashed up country).. it would create 100 000 call center Jobs, which would life 1 million South Africans out of abject poverty.

I am also trying to inform those that will listen about the corruption in our country that still needs to be worked out.

If you would like more information please have a look at:

I try and limit my impact on the environment by wasting as little as possible. I work with the local government, and am on two local volunteer boards which have a fair amount of political power in the borough (town), and I am helping manage thier websites.

I have helped out three friends who over the years have found themselves homeless by providing them a place to stay in exchange for effort in finding a job and thier own place. Currently, I'm providing a home for a dog (owner abondonment) while we find a person looking for a dog to match, and I help manage the website (user access and site permissions).

I work with the Boy Scouts (currently in a reduced role as a co-leader of a venture crew), and volunteer with the Shaolin Temple that I practice Gong-Fu with. We have provided rent assistance and holiday fun for local families whose current situations would not afford them much of a holiday season otherwise.

I used to work with Habitat for Humanity, and also with the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

I'm currently looking for a volunteer opportunity on a Native American reservation, though my work schedule will most likely prevent me from doing much in that regard for a few more years.

And I pay my taxes.

Roman

What fucking war bonds?

I'm sorry. Should have called them by their proper name– patriot bonds (http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ebonds/res_e_bonds_eepatriotbond.htm).

Well patriots, you putting your money where your mouth is?

Oxygen

How much have you bought? How much of that is going to line Congress's already fattened wallets? And how does worshipping a dead Middle-Easterner do anything for the country? What branch are you in? How many single moms have you left in your wake of out-populating Islams? Is all that money you've poured into Patriot Bonds being stemmed to offset the welfare burden of all these bastards you've apparently been producing? Are you putting your money where your mouth is?

I'm guessing you aimed your rant at Americans, although nothing in the title of the thread restricts the question to Americans, as though patriotism only exists in the United States. Are there no patriotic Germans? Are there no patriotic Englishmen? Italians? Japanese? Are there no patriots in any other country? How did we corner the market on patriotism?
