View Full Version : What Is Good Music?

I hear a lot of people say that music sucks today, or certain genres of music are talentless.

What then IS good music? Many will say you need to know how to play an instrument, but what about the Whitney Houston and Frank Sinatras of the world. Some will say you need to be able to sing, but what about the Mozarts and Jimmy Hedrix of the world, how do we compare the rhythm of hip-hop with the energy of Metal? Is Classical better than Rock, or Country better than Hip-Hop, and how can we tell?

The reason why I'm asking this question is because I personally find many forms of music entertaining, and wonder why many only have one they like...

I'd say anything that sounds like it could be made by a computer program (Dance eJay for example) isn't worth the hassle. Plus most things on the radio, but thats just me.

What ever happened to R&B. Its not around anymore

Interesting point, I always have arguments over the use of computers in music. Most of the beats and rythyms you hear in these songs could never be reproduced with instruments, I have no problem with it, as long as the voices are not enhanced(*cough* Britney Spears).

LOL

I do like synthetic bits in music ie Rammstein but for it all to be like that and sound bad, its a different story all together. Wumpscut is totally synthetic, but it sounds good.

But mainstream, in my opinion, is FAKE. Its just singers and not the bands, you never see the bands play ie Bitchney Spears, all you see is dancers

What a person considers good music, differs from person to person.

If the music feels good, when you can really feel it in your body and it moves you one way or another, than that is the music for you. I do not think it only is one kind of music. One label I mean.

I like lots of music, except fot the Whitney Houstons and the like and some more. It is not so though that I only like the old rock, like The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and so on from years, years back.

There are a few songs from Mel C I like too, for example. Okay, my favorite music is classic rock. I think the difference is that it is played with feeling. The music is feelable, much more than the electronic music and computer music and even trance.

It's too unpersonal, so to say. There are good musicians nowadays too, though. As long as you can feel it, it is right.

Now I hope I said it right...:)

Good music is whatever makes you feel good but may not provide the same reaction from everyone.

Quality music is music that can be appreciated by everyone, irregardless of type or style.

The problem is some listeners are unable to recognize quality music however, those same listeners have trouble recognizing anything of quality.

Well, like you've probably heard from many people, there is no "good" music. It's all taste. And it's true.

So I'll just clarify my point of view.

POP & ALL FAKE "MUSIC" SUCKS!!

I hate artificial, computer made things. People who play an instrument have learned to do it for years and just a tiny fraction became popular. It's not fair that some dude with no musical background who doesn't even know who Mozart is sits next to his computer and creates the next "hit". It drives me nuts!!!

Same thing about all the boy and girl bands and pop singer - sell outs who sing with a backup and don't understand shit in music and don't even write their own lyrics, not to mention the music itself. And I hate that everybody is licking their asses. Especially that Cristina Aguilera slut. She's a humiliation!!!

I love real music, done by proffessionals. I listen to classical music and classical rock, which is an incarnation of classical music and 80s' metal bands, which are also an incarnation of classical music and very few of todays metal bands because most of them become sell-outs too. Yes, I admit. Even my favourite band Metallica :( who kicked everybodys' asses before that song with Ja Crap came out... Hope the new album is nothing like it...

I hate rap and rap-metal. They plainly suck. Rap has lyrics, but no music. Rap metal bands all have that dumbass DJ sound of that "scraching" crap in it. WTF??!? I HATE DJs!!!!!!

But... again, that's just me. I have nothing against whoever likes what I don't. Don't flame me.

as ffor electronic music- Wumpscut and Daft Punk for instance sound good. I like the synthetic voices if they sound cool or bring me some associations. Smtimes they give a special mood to the song.

I have nothing against synthetic n computer music as long as it sounds good and is not a combination of beat samples.
I am talking about ORIGINAL computer music here.

as for good music in general-
I enjoy metal, trance, meditative, electronic- any music that brings some association/hallucination lol to my mind. Music that builds a picture in my mind. Enigma is a good example. Or Skyforger- I can actually see/feel the battles with crusaders.

mainstream is made for everyone supposedly but everyone is different and any person with a developed intellect and personal view on things doesn't like mainstream. Thus why teens are the most mainstream followers.

like many others said above me in their posts, its a matter of taste, but i must say that i consider 'good music' all artists that can bring something into the process of making the music itself, like writing the lyrics, playing an instrument and so on. i dont consider britney spears good music because she doesnt write anything herself or is in any other way involved in making the music she sings(and on top of that she cant sing either:( ). but like christina milian, when i first heard her music i thought here we have another britney spears like artist...but when i heard she writes her own music, and made the song 'play' from jennifer lopez i must admit i was wrong and i do consider her as 'good music', it brings respect for the artist although maybe the genre of the music is not something i like...thats just a matter of taste.

my 2 favourite artists are eminem and dido, they both are involved in the making of the music, plus they touch an emotional part of me with their songs, which for me is very important in music..i have to be moved by a song, this can be in a happy way, a sad way, or a angry way, just as long as it brings strong emotions to me...and most of the pop songs just dont do this to me, it all sounds the same to me...

Thats what I thought when that Jessica Simpson had that 'mew look'. I thought, hang on, thats Britney Spears, no it isn't, she can remotely sing. She looked exactly like her. I wasn't too scared by that.

But thats not the point. I think 'good' music is where the band/person write all their own stuff ie Lyrics and Music and put it all together and it sounds like some effort was actually put into it

Britney just does what she is told and she gets millions for it (though she complains about this in her songs:confused: )

Accurate post, Q. Not 100%, but yeah, in general, agreed.
"quality.." inspired thought by Robert J Pirsig or not?

I encompass all spectrums of music. ...except for maybe songs with tons of swear words (*cough cough* DMX) and death metal. The closest to cult music I've ever loved would be System Of A Down. Japanese goth music is good too...Gackt is awesome, even if he looks like a girl. :D

Wait...I remember what I hate now! (Hooray!) :D I e-hat the Hong Kong/China music industry. They're even worse than the pop stars here, because they basically take some person off
the street/talent show, offer them a deal, then make them into a star. My friends showed me some vids, and sure, they look great, but they suck in live performances. Their videos are meaningful but boring, they're pratically anorexic, and pale as ghosts.
And afterwards, I rail endlessly about them for 2 days. I'd thought my friends would have learned by now, but nope. No problem with me, I enjoy the ranting. :D

Quality exists independently of subjective interpretation and preception.

Good Music is (and should be) a combination of musical theory, and artistic vision (through ideology, production, lyrics, modes, and or moods, etc) to express an overall concept through a complete emotional experience.

Music that moves you. Played well, with feelable guitars(played with passion, from the bottom of the players "spirit") and the lyrics too, preferable yes. It just makes me fly, drown in the music.

Nothing is more bliss than to drown in good, feelable music. I, personally, think the pop from nowadays is to shallow, too commercial with no real passion, thus not going till deep in your soul, so to say...It misses the essence. The fly part...:)

pop music, as will all other forms of pop culture, are inherently entertainment modes in place of artistic modes. therefore they are disqualified by a de facto failure in artistic integrity.

fukk off.
