The thread regarding the Labor Party and Gay Marraige really got me curious...

This thread is mainly to those who oppose gay marraige but of course everyone is welcome to chime in...

Say you were in charge of the government at either a local, state, or federal level, where gay marriage was once allowed, but due to a recent change is no longer allowed. Now say that during that time of gay marriage, 20,000 homosexual couples got married (40,000 individuals if you cant count).

Now that gay marraige is no longer allowed, what would you do about the 20,000 marraige certificates out there?

Would you take them away saying that even though they were married at one point that they no longer are? Or would you allow the government to continue to recognize their marraige but only those who were married in the time it was legal for them to marry?

Yep, just take away their marriage permits ...just like taking away someone's drivering permit. No big deal.

Hey, just like a gov coming in and taking people's guns right out of their homes, ain't it? The gov has permitted guns for over 300 years, but suddenly the liberals want come in and take our guns. That's pretty shitty, ain't it? And I'll bet that you're anti-gun, ain't ya'?

It would be unfair to recognize them without allowing people to get married anymore. The fairest option would be to nullify the certificate; however, I am unsure as to what I would do.

In the US you generally can't undo things which were done legally at the time. Its called grandfathering. So they would probably continue to be married, but no further lic. would be issued.

Now they might cook the laws to prevent realizing any benefit from that marriage by specifically excluding it from other provisions.
