Weird dark splotch in Libyan desert

    They are pits used to store oil. To the East and Northeast you can see the fire stacks from the refineries. To the west is what looks like a pipeline running North South. It is also interesting to note that the people there don’t drive along designated roads, but seem just to drive straight to where they need to go. You can see this in the hundreds of faint lines between the man made features.

    um, look at the scale of the item linked in the OP. that's not a oil pit.

    I don't know what it is. Huge, black lake/deposit, somehow spreading south west....
    maybe its a section of black sand, which, as exposed, is being blown by surface winds?



    edit: oh, you were verifying that the smaller objects were oil pits. NM.
    Still don't know WTH the OP image is.

    You know, upon closer inspection, it seems to resemble a field of fresh Libyan camel dung covering a section of sand in the Libyan desert. If it isn't, then it's gotta be something else..........???
