I disagree. Sex is either a recreational social behavior, or vehicle for reproduction. It's more of an intrinsic "component" rather than it's central focus. If I were to pick something humans were all about, I would say it was ultimately the quest for knowledge or possibly "meaning".
In herd animals sex is not the primary 'goal', it's survival of the herd. Although genes are selfish, you can perhaps say something similar for all species.. the primary 'goal' is survival of the species.
As we age, we don't have the "urge to merge" any longer, or at least not as strongly as at one time in our lives. It is true that sex is a very important part of our youth as that what nature intended us to do, make more humans but being careful not to have to many children or it would upset the balance of the FOOD chain. To many people and not enough to eat leads to very bad consequences for humanity. Overcrowding also leads to more complications as well. So masturbation is a very common solution to ease our sexual desires without having any problems stem for its practice what so ever. So yes, have all the sex your little hands can muster up, and down or wherever they may go!
