A few nights ago, TCM showed an old movie. Prince valiant was played by Robert Wagner, while Sir Gawain was played by Sterling Hayden.

I recognized both voices almost immediately. I might have recognized the young Wagner without hearing the voice, but I would never have recognized Hayden by facial features alone.

Until seeing that movie, I would never have imagined that voices could be a better clue than facial features for identifying actors. It seems that some voices change less over the years than some faces.

Has anybody else had similar experiences?

Oh yes, to me, the voice is far more easy to recognize than the face!
What is more, if a person lies to me when in face to face communication, they may trick me into believing them. But when on the phone -- no way, I recognize right away what's going on merely by the voice!

Most likely, but I can't come up with any at the moment.
