When I playback the TV show from the HD, it keeps getting out of focus for 2 sec then back then out of focus again. I suspect it is caused somehow by memory usage, but it is a strange occurance.

I tried to turn off everything while watching video, but it still keeps doing it. I downloaded the same stuff on the other laptop and it is just fine, so it isn't a file issue. I don't get it...

I will try a different video player, maybe it is some kind of file transfer issue...

Hm, others had the same problem:

    http://codecs.forumotion.net/t370-video-playback-goes-in-and-out-of-focus

"Blurry would be a better way to describe it.... it is kind of hard to put into words though, because it does not go so blurry as to become unwatchable or so you can't tell what is happening; it is slight, but definitely noticeable. It becomes most obvious when it is a closeup shot of a persons face or an object. It almost seems as though the problem is with rendering contrast. The image alternates from crisp and detailed to washed out and somewhat pixelated."

Windows 7 OS and Windows Media Player....

Sounds like the decoder for whatever codec you're using (Xvid x264?) is having a difficult time interpreting the vectors.

Most compression codecs work like this:
Perfect Frame (I-frame) --> Vector Difference from Frame P-frame --> Vector Difference from Fame P/B-Frame ....
X number of frames until the video hits another "Perfect" I-frame.

If your decoder is misinterpreting the intermediary changes periodic blurriness and pixelation is exactly what you should expect.

Hm, the plot thickens. Now this is happening on the other laptop too, Vista with GOM Player... I tried to reset to defaults, no difference...

    The same with VLC....

So how do I fix it?

Probably by reinstalling your codec list. Might want to just test the video on a nother system first.

When the image is created, each frame is edited on the fly. You have...

    Motion Blur Reduction.
    Upscaling
    Digital Noise Reduction

    etc

The main culprit for slowdown, and image blurring is DNR. If you switch off DNR you may get a better picture.

OK, what is DNR and how do I switch it off?

Digital Noise Reduction, and it depend on the player where you turn it off.

If this is a timing problem, it may be related to temperature, since clocks in some circuits back off to reduce heat dissipation. You might want to check for airflow.
