Hey,
I just got a portable video recorder/player and I'm looking to download video's to put on it. Problem is, I haven't downloaded shit off the internet since Napster was free so I have no idea where to start.

Any good, free, capable programs out there to download? I'm mostly looking for TV shows but maybe a few movies.

The first time I ever used Bittorent, I received a legal notice. I didn't even watch the pertinent content.

Something to think about.

I got one of those as well. Kind of an iffy program to use if you plan on downloading illegal content.

I use YouRipper to download You Tube files (FLV format). Many shows and movies are available this way, and the files are small. I use Videora iPod converter to put them on my iPod.

There's lots of places by now.

http://www11.alluc.org/alluc/tv-shows.html is an index of many popular video sharing sites and most have an option to download the movie. Much like the link spider posted.

I mainly use the Azureus BitTorrent client and www.thepiratebay.org. BitTorrent certainly has the largest selection and it's usually quite fast. There's also a plugin called PeerGuardian that helps blacklist IP addresses being used by the MPAA and friends.

http://stage6.divx.com/videos/ is a video sharing site like Youtube but with much better quality DivX videos of unlimited size. Also an option to download.

Between those 3 sources I can find any TV show or movie.

Actually there's one more perfectly legal alternative, though the selection is very limited for movies. In a google search type in:
Many people upload files to their web servers but leave directory listings open. This will seach only directory listings of files that you can download, legally it's the responsibility of the people maintaining the site to close the directory listings so as far as I know it's not against the law to download files from them no matter what the content. Here's an example search.
