I really cant stand this particular "holiday"...at all. I mean its only the 31st and for the past 2 weeks all I have heard on the radio are advertisments for jewlery, gift cards and fowers. All of them claiming that this is the best day of the year to tell the one you love you love them. Why do people get caught up in this? I really dont understand, but I have to do the valentines day thing because its expected of me.

What do you do for Valentines day, anything "special"?

Would do nothing if you could get away with it?

Just wondering

When we think of Valentine's Day, we often think of red roses, candy in heart- shaped boxes, mushy valentines, and winged cherubs flying about shooting starry-eyed lovers with arrows.

But did you know that the origin of Valentine's Day, or Saint Valentine's Day, comes from the life and death of a Christian martyr? According to author Martha Zimmerman, the date traditionally celebrated as St. Valentine's Day finds it origin in the Roman festival of romance called Lupercalia, when the gods Juno and Pan were honored. It was a fertility festival or a lover's holiday looking forward to the return of Spring. In the fifth century, in an attempt to abolish the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius changed Lupercalia and its February 15 date to February 14 and called it Saint Valentine's Day. Even though the names and the date were changed, the emphasis continued to be on love.

Who was the real Valentine, and why did he have a day named after him?

Some authorities credit Geoffrey Chaucer with originating the custom of linking Valentine's Day with lovers. No link between the day and lovers exists before the time of Chaucer, thus leading some to conclude that it was this famous English author who connected the day with lovers. The fullest and earliest description of the tradition occurs in Chaucer's "Parliament of Fouls" composed around 1380. Since that time it has been traditional to connect St. Valentine's Day with love.

But who was the real Saint Valentine? St. Valentine was a Roman Christian who, according to tradition, was martyred during the persecution of Christians in the third century by Emperor Claudius II. The only thing certain about the day we remember as St. Valentine's Day is that it commemorates a martyrdom. Claudius II declared all Christians illegal citizens. By his definition, they were guilty of treason because Roman citizens were required by law to worship the Emperor by declaring publicly, "Caesar is Lord!" Of course, this no Christian could do.

The real Valentine was a Roman Christian martyred during the third century A.D. by the Emperor Claudius II. Prior to his death, Valentine continued to minister in prison by witnessing to his prison guards. One of the guards was a good man who had adopted a blind girl. He asked Valentine if his God could help his daughter. Valentine prayed and the girl was given her sight. The guard and his whole family, 46 people, believed in Jesus and were baptized. When the Emperor heard about this he was furious that Valentine was still making converts even in prison, so he sentenced Valentine to death.

I LOVE Valentine's Day. I LOVE being surrounded by lots of flowers. And I LOVE all the chocolate, candy, presents, and cards. It's a great day to tell everyone you love them. I like going out for a quiet dinner at a great restaurant (Zooma, Nobu, Neptunes, Moonshadows, or Dukes...), a walk on the beach, and then sitting on the deck watching the ocean--especially when there's a full moon. :)

Yes. But why only wait for one particular day to do all of that?

I am not a fan of Valentine's Day. It is just overly commercial and superficial. If you love someone, you say you love them every chance you get, give flowers, chocolates, etc, all the time and whenever you want to. Not just one day of the year and then forget about it, which is what a lot of people do.

If my husband only did that once a year, he'd find the bouquet of flowers rammed up his nose.:)

I agree. Sounds like a horrible Mills and Boons storyline.

We go out and eat, get a hotel room with a hot tub, do the nasty for a while, then go home to the kids.

now you know shorty is gonna be here any second to get all uppity about you swearing, don't cha? lol

I wish Valentine's Day was during the summer. I would much prefer a picnic and outside sex to a restaurant and a hotel room.

Anyways... I have always made my girlfriend dinner, tehn we spend the night at home together. The only real difference is I make a special dinner and light candles. I dont see the point in all that candy and flower crap.

My husband brings me flowers all the time. It's just something that he does. He usually gives me a bunch of flowers or sometimes just one nice flower he has bought or picked in the garden, or a plant, etc, and a book because he knows I like to read a lot. Hell, if he's in the bookstore and sees a book he thinks I'll like, he buys it. If he only did that on valentine's day, it would not be appreciated as much and as I said, it would probably end up his nose.

I like the whimsical and non-planned flower, plant or book giving.:) I usually prefer the plants but meh.. it's still nice.:) He bought me a punnet of chocolate mint plants last week. In short.. it doesn't need to be a special occasion to tell someone you love them or to give them flowers or gifts. It shouldn't be a special occasion thing.

Send cards to people I like.

Heres one that was not so popular

You crept into my life, you crept into my heart, you crept into my soul

/turn card page

In short, you're a GIANT CREEP.

I wonder why?

Mostly I forget when it is Valentines day, unless I have plans to go out with someone.

Heh at the card!

We forgot about it last year. Of course I was the size of a whale awaiting the birth of our second child so the thought of going out to eat was not appealing. I am usually reminded by the cheesy advertising. But my husband and I never really celebrated it in the past and I doubt we will in the future. It's too commercial for my liking.

Like Christmas really.. I'd ignore that too if it weren't for the kids.:p

Well it first depends if the kids are around or not. ;)

If they aren't around, I usually make a really nice dinner with candles and stuff (just like you lol) I like to make chocolate dipped strawberries too.
I give him a card and sometimes buy him chocolates.

He sometimes buys me flowers ( I tell him not to because they jack the prices up so much I think it's a waste of money)

We might watch a movie at home or go out to one. Then of course we have sex..... ( checking.........yeah I won't have the god damn curse!! we are good!!! lol )

But I do agree with you they make too much of the whole Valentine's Day thing. I feel sorry for men who's wives or g/f's expect the dozen roses that they are charging 3 times more then usual for. To me it's a big waste of money.

I would rather get flowers or something just out of the blue.......then on a day you know they felt obligated to go buy you something.

If you spend time with your partner and tell them you love them throughout the yr.......Really what makes Valentines day so special.

It's all commerce.. perhaps even worse then Christmas and the likes because it's for something so stupid. If you love someone you should make them know it every day.

Cos people iz stupid..

Valentines Day isn't my favorit holiday. That would be Thanksgiving when the entire family gathers around the table to share food and conversation.

On Valentines Day my wife and I go out to dinner at a nice restaurant.

Sandy, those multi colored roses are beautiful! I wish they were real. I got a bouquet lavender and orange roses. I wish I knew what teh colors meant (if they mean anything at all)

I got a split lip this morning from last night. oh yeah, hurts so good. ;)
