View Full Version : Using usernames in Thread titles

I think people should refrain from using usernames in thread titles for a security reason.

For example thread titles like

- XEV is a homosexual
- Let's hear it from Flores
and things like that

I'm requesting from Porifry that he be kind enough to delete those threads for good or change the tile to exclue the name. My reason is.

When a person do a simple yahoo or google search on a username, the threads in question appear at the top of the search list. This can be by far damaging to the person specially if they are using their last name or a usename known to others.

Engaging in regular debates is harmless because it is almost undectable by most search engines.

I would love to see those threads deleted....I would be gratefull.

Agreed.

I dunno if user names in a thread title increase the odds of a hit or not... I searched on "flores" by itself and got almost 2 million hits, and found no Sciforums reference on the many pages I looked at. Refining the search to "flores" AND "SciForums" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_qdr=all&q=flores+sciforums&btnG=Google+Search), a got only 15 hits, none of which showed a thread with your name in the title, even though you posted such a thread a few months back.

:m: Peace.

Goofy,
I agree that flores, meaning flowers is safe, but try searching for heflores, and walla, I'm the first hit.

I really don't care that much, but for other uses with unique names like goofyfish for instance, you're most likely to be a hit.

The thread was created recently so google probably hasn't indexed it yet. The spiders will take time and surely come.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_qdr=all&q=heflores+

and even google got it first. Damn I'm famous... you entered walla by mistake that's why your search came empty.

Now, I'm kindly begging that this problem get fixed. I'm willing to accept gays in all shapes and forms and denounce Islam and become a Strong Atheist.....not really, but anyways...

Come on people, I may easily have a political future on stake.

Actually, neither search engine is picking up this thread. They are targeting on your post from 5/7 that is cached on their system. It is a coincidence.

:m: Peace.

Alright Goofy,
Keep the threads, but it's still not appropriate for this site to use usernames in thread titles....Afterall, we are supposed to be discussing subject not persons.

I never commented on the issue of keeping or deleting, I merely questioned the accuracy of the reason for any action...

I agree : you're not the only one who use "Flores" as a forum name, so you can't say that you don't want it to appear in Google or Yahoo.
However, you're right, the threads that deal with a member should be deleted, but if you want to talk about my beauty, my wonderful IQ,... ;):D.
What?! That's not true?!.

Really, not to compete with sarge and SG-N in the butt kissing contest, but isn't Goofy so good. I love that guy...really, He's my favoriate mod by far, even if he ban me. I have to admit that I have a crush going on for Goofy, that sometimes manifest itself in weird unfriendly way.

I never had any problem with the mods, so I don't need to remember who they are! (no offence to them... ;))

Sarge, I know you are always on my side and I'm on yours. You are the carrot of my peas....and I'm the ketchup on your fries....That's why I decide to join you in the butt kissing contest...I didn't make it up, I heard it in another thread used wrongly for you, so I protested in my indirect way by joining you.

I'm generally against using usernames in thread titles, just because that' is almost assuredly trolling. Generally if you're trying to get a specific user's attention with a thread named after him/her it's probably in order for you to piss that user off.

As for the defense that it makes the thread easier to find on Google, I just don't get that defense. If you don't want people finding the things that you have said. . . then why the hell are you posting them on the internet to begin with?
