View Full Version : User`s Name or True Identity?
Morteza Olangui 08-22-03, 07:33 AM hi
I was wondering why we use user`s name instead of our real names. Whose idea is it? Internet founders? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using these pseudo names?
Do we use it because threre are bad guys who might be monitoring the sites, apart from secret service "retarded agents."
Or is it because they are beautifull and sometines more meaningful than our real names?
I very much like to know your point of view.
Even some of us have not given their nationality or their place of birth. Why?

curioucity 08-22-03, 07:39 AM For user name:
Well, I personally think that many don't really like to be known by their real name in online activities (though in some cases like e-mail or IMS, this is useless at an advanced stage), so they try their best to design names that represent whatever in their mind at the time they make the user name. Or another reason: They feel that there are more that one person have similar name, thus they make unique user names as to distinguish, for example, Jon Arbuckle and Jon Arston etc....
As for misc info like nationality etc, probably they don't like Shakespear (hah hah, jokin of courz, but hope you know what I mean...)
outlandish 08-22-03, 10:21 AM Hello Morteza.
Today I had toast for breakfast, and I'm wearing CK Eternity.;)
cosmictraveler 08-22-03, 03:11 PM I use a made up name because I don't want to use my real name of Ira Ben Fuchs.
SwedishFish 08-22-03, 09:10 PM well for starters, 1. there is more than one person out there with the same name. there are probably 497 sean mccarthy's in massachusettes alone. 2. anonymity to protect your identity from potential predators/stalkers/harassers. a handle is easily changed but if you use your name, you can't change that outside of court. 3. it's a chance to name yourself, give yourself a name representative of you beyond what your parents put on your birth certificate.
tablariddim 08-23-03, 01:44 PM we use made up names and desist from publishing our personal information such as age, address etc. for Privacy; a very important concept in the West.

well those poor eastern monkeys are too busy eating from off the ground to be busy getting familiar such grandiose western concepts as "Privacy".
Could you be anymore patronising?
Lord_Couchpotato 08-23-03, 03:10 PM Well, for people who's name is "Constantine" or "Ophelia" it's quite clear. Plus, I know a few people with names who can't be pronounced in English! I am called Guy, but I sometimes prefer people I hardly know call me Couch or something like this. I respond naturally to that name, as naturally as I respond to Guy :D .
What more, some of the "thing" in Internet is that people can fake all they want, nobody will know who they really are - you can be a German 28-year old male who works for insurance companies that when going on the internet becomes an Egyptian 34 year old female lawyer... This is the "magick" of the Internet...
And of course, there are always those parents out there who don't allow their children to give out personnal details, and for all the good reasons - even though it's quite rare, you can always be dealing with a madman

Didn't mean to be patronising. From my experience, it is true that different cultures put more or less emphasis on Privacy and yes, I do think it's (privacy) is more important in the west.
Countries that traditinally have large extended families, would not have that luxury.

Hi:
Is this privacy so important to push us to avoid giving the name of the country we live in.?
Am I correct to say that by not giving our sex, nationality, date and place of birth and at times giving fabricated informations we are exchanging counterfeit coins.?thanks:p
JoojooSpaceape 08-25-03, 04:03 AM Because if some of us ( like myself) gave you our last names youd have a heck of a tim pronouncing it right
Morteza Olangui 08-25-03, 04:07 AM hi
I nod and smile!
I believe it's just aesthetics. When chat rooms started popping up long ago they wanted to promote creativity and imagination. Kids were so enthralled with the smileys and being able to talk to their friend BigBadMofo or Hotgurlie69. I know that the first chat room I ever visited looked like it was tailored for kids.
Dr Lou Natic 08-25-03, 09:09 AM Ok, I'm not really a doctor.
I stuck it on the front of my name in an attempt to get more respect.
I got it.
So I decided to become a doctor.
My name really is Louis Theturd Natic. I hope you understand why I refrain from including my middle name:(

Not at all, we all have a choice. We're not here to exchange names and addresses, we exchange ideas; who we actually are is almost irrelevant.
Also, if people wish to gain any extra personal info, after say, hitting it off with a particular poster, they can always ask for it through private messaging.
Bear in mind that on Sciforums, people talk about anything and everything, sometimes about things that may incriminate them, which makes privacy doubly important, eg. :m:
