Money is tight nowadays, everyone knows that. So, if you want long-term unemployed people to benefit society at no cost, why not offer them a £5 worth of police confiscated marijuana for a days work? It would get me out of bed on a rainy morning (just)!

It's a bad idea. Next thing you know there are thousands of CSS's running around saying their neighbors dog is really a Giant Hyrax!

    You smoke too much.

....or you could legalize it, and create jobs through the industry itself.
Growing, harvesting , processing, packaging, delivery, retail etc... some or all of those steps in production and distribution will create jobs. All the fancy weed Cafes and specialty stores that will inevitably spring up will require clerks.

lol! Yeah, I've doubled my usual just recently and I can't afford it. My rent is overdue but I'll just get away with it this time. My new K2 electric bike is the answer, saving on bus fares. I'll bury two lots of stash so that I have to cycle the hills to retrieve it. That way, £20 can last me a week. Good tip if you're flatbroke and a smoker.

Is there a credible scientific report which comes to this possible conclusion of legalisation? They plan to legalise in California I heard?

It would be an interesting trial for the rest of the world perhaps? I don't expect miracles of course, but the social outcome in the long run would be interesting.

there would be a lot more volunteers, if nothing else.

gosh just think of the number of folks that would do something like escort service in the local hospitals... they may take them to the wrong ward..but you could give then the weed after they are done instead of beforehand

Soros (billionare who broke Bank of England) is funding Cali votes for legalization. California is making lot's of headway. I talked to a friend in Denver recently who told me more of these little grass pop-ups Popped than in L.A. I suppose it's just dealers going legit, but there is there is a crazy demand that is just shooting through the little bits of supply the gov it increasingly allowing. IMO Soros' money will speak in Cali. Other states especially in the NE need not worry, medical marijuana is coming, but they will certainly not look to copy LA and Denver's mistakes now that they have been made.

to the OP's idea: Not in the right direction. Rather, sell the confiscated stuff for cash - and let people decide what to buy with their time. I would hate to work for pasta, ketchup, orange juice, and pot. Rather give me 20 bucks and let me decide what I need.

If you want to get payed in pot, just go mow lawns around the neighborhood and try bringing it up with a few of your clients.

oh .... hospitals are always looking for volunteers to take patients to different labs and such.. at least here in the US... I've done it a number of times at the VA..you get lunch generally.

I'm not aware of one (this is not to say that there isn't one). I also think they've recently repealed the legislation that legalized a lot of the medical dispensaries, so they now have to close up shop. California legalizing would be pointless anyway since they can't overrule the feds.

What inspired my proposal was (first off) the fact that your idea involves confiscating something from the public because its illegal, then redistributing it to the public without addressing this issue.

Furthermore, What's stopping the "volunteers" from selling the marijuana they are given? Personally, if I were jobless, I would much rather have 50 bucks in my wallet than a quarterbag of sensimilla. Getting the munchies would be unpleasant since I can't afford any hot pockets or frozen pizzas. It doesn't provide any of the kind of euphoria as something like heroin, so it's not going to do anything for my depression from the numerous unpaid bills looming over my head.

Since you're trying to use marijuana to address the problem of joblessness, why try to use it to actually generate jobs? Marijuana has a strong consumer base despite risk of arrest and ludicrous inflated prices. Since you are OK with people possessing it, then why give it away?
It doesn't really make rational "legal" sense anyway........ if its legal enough for people to possess it, then you can't really confiscate it in the first place LOL.

Weed is a hugely untapped commodity. Any attempt or move to get it out of the black market will benefit many people.

Most volunteers already have jobs a great deal of them are retired.

They do it because they want to, not because they have to.

Seems like the wrong term is being used

Thanks for the replies dom, and I understand about the apparent hypocrasy of confiscating due to illegality and then giving the stuff away. It would have to be done on the 'medical grounds' issue and be dispensed for the long-term unemployed who have certain medical problems. The idea is to create a culture of working for the community and being able to live modestly and happily i.e. as an alternative to being an employee of a money-making organisation. The volunteer scheme I looked into caters for the short-term unemployed who have a car and cash, but do the work so as to make their CV look good. If they weren't looking for an imminent job, would these people be doing the volunteering? What about people who don't have transport?? Why not pay me for my days work in cash so I can run my electric bike? Reason: it cost money.

    You sound like a radical.

    I love your radicalism.

Legalize marijuana. Grow the hemp industry. What a revival that would be.

Love the sound of it. And take the DEA down a notch. Cut em down to size.

Remember when they stopped an entire shipment of hemp seed in the Detroit harbor. While the case dragged out in court, the hemp seed rotted. The judge ruled against the DEA. Their pathetic claim was that hemp food products were causing false positives on drug tests. That was their justification for ruining an entire boat load of nutritious hemp food.

That shit makes me ill. They're really just a bunch of useless bullies. In fact, why does the US need them? I say get rid of them completely. We have enough law enforcement thugs suck up federal dollars already.

And those poor corrupt drug enforcement shitheads will be out of a job, won't they. They won't be able to enjoy the drug money and seized property and innocent people ruined. I've heard most of the DEA are into selling the drugs they confiscate anyway. :shh:
