Greetings,

I've just recently completed a format and clean install of Win XP Pro, this time including Service Pack 2. On a few occasions now I've returned to my computer to hear some serious drive activity when none should be going on. Checking the process list via Task Manager I've noticed this: dfrgfat.exe . Obviously this is some sort of 'defrag while not being used' kinda thingy, but I've yet to be able to find any such process through my research. If anyone has any info on this I'd greatly appreciate it.
TIA

leopold,

That's messed up... the first palce I went to was liutilities. Hmm.. perhaps I misspelled. In any case, the only defragger I currently have installed is the one packaged with Windows, not a Diskkeeper one. I still have to figure out how to disable this mother....
Thanks anyways..

edit
i am running winme so i can't give you much help.
i can use msconfig to disable programs that load at startup.
also this sounds like a scheduled task have you tried task manager?
like i said i'm running millennium

all the stuff i find on dfrgfat.exe is related to diskeeper.
a search of msdn knowledge base
for dfrgfat.exe yeilds nothing.

leopold,

Thanks again, but I'm way ahead of you. I never run a PC without TweakUI. And I don't want to uninstall the default defragger, and I never have any scheduled tasks.

How old is your HDD... is it on the way out?

It's usually related to diskkeeper, probably as a scheduled defrag. But if you don't have that installed, it'll be the native windows defrag trying to do... something.

Most of the time, this sort of problem needs a more thorough analysis than just the OS and faulty process. I need to know eveything that is going on - and a good way to do that is for you to run HijackThis and post a logfile. Doesn't cover everything, but it's a damn good start.
