I think a lot of the big name actors of the past were overrated. Take John Wayne, for example. He wasn't acting. He was just being himself. That can be charming and make for good bit parts in a couple of fun movies or a TV career a la Jon Stewart, but in my opinion it does not justify decades of glory. John Wayne was the exact same person in every movie he ever made. He did not try to get into the character, or the milieu, or the spirit of the story. He just memorized his lines, followed the director's instructions, and collected his paychecks and his awards.

Too true.
Consider his portrayal of Genghis Khan in - I believe - The Conqueror...?
Hillarious !

A lot of big names are overrated as actors. But people like them precisely because they play themselves, and have the same recognisable persona no matter what film they are in. Think Sean Connery, Julia Roberts, Arnold Schwartzenegger... the list goes on and on.

Yeah, the common saying in acting goes along the lines of, "People don't want to see you being the character, they want to see you as the character."

You know, I liked Charleton Heston. I thought he was pretty good. A bit underrated now, because he's not in any movies, but he's still good.
John Wayne is overrated, but he's frickin' John Wayne, so...ya know... :D

You can only act as good as the script given to you. Tom Hanks made Forrest Gump a cult classic . It had all emotions in the movie. A great movie will always credit the actors abilities and flaunt it more.

You cannot deny that Terminator 2 was a bad movie. Oh course the movie did not require much acting him AS, just looking badass really.

And I think Sean Connery is a great guy :)

Bill Murray -- fantastic actor, but I guess he gets the respect he deserves.Comedians get love, but they don't get the respect of their fellow professionals.

I remember one night when we all thought there was a chance that he'd win for "Lost in Translation," Jon Stewart said on The Daily Show with uncharacteristic emotion, "Go get it, Bill. Do it for all of us."

Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, Marty Feldman, Gene Wilder. . . There are long lists of funny people who are every bit as talented and profound as their counterparts in drama--and if you ask me considerably more so than their counterparts in the action/adventure genre.

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "All of Me," "The Producers," "Some Like It Hot," these movies are far better than some of the not-so-very-dramatic dreck that takes the Academy Awards year after year.

It was an absolute crime against the universe that Peter Sellers never won an Oscar, not even for "Being There," one of the greatest movies ever made.

Robin Williams. Overrated, underrated, or just right?

There was an ad on SBS (Australia), which presented audio parodies of Hugh Grant playing various parts... which all sounded exactly the same :)

Robin Williams. Overrated, underrated, or just right?I suppose "just right" covers it. He's a comedian at heart, which means his dramatic range is a bit limited. Yet like Steve Martin and Bill Murray, he is capable of stepping outside of his normal roles. And like them, within the boundaries of comedy he is very versatile.

He has acquitted himself well in a number of movies that weren't quite comedies. "The World According to Garp" comes to mind.

Hugh Grant--bleahh. All this time I thought he was making it because the girls loved him. And then I found out that they don't like him either.
