Does such a website exist? I'd be interested in an encyclopedia of sorts, about the universe that Tolkien created.

Ultimate Resource: try greenbooks.com. It's not even close, but hey- maybe that's my purpose.
Nah, I've got to help the Elves who missed the boat get to Valinor.
But maybe I'll have a little spare time along the way...

Ahem.
There is not resource, but come to me with your questions... I can name anything. Almost anything about the movie, too. But mostly the books.
*tear*

Although I don't know the witch-king thing. Don't judge me by this. I mean, how many people do you run into that know the Lord of the Eagles in the first age???

I don't think it's fair to judge LOTR by PJ's rendition of it. I mean, cheers to him and all, but it'd be bloody impossible to put Middle-earth on screen.
Also- I commend him for excellent casting. Except for Liv. 200 minutes of Orlando Bloom... hey, what can I say, it's an affliction.

I'm still upset by the Tom Bombadil/Evil Faramir thing. Sigh.

PJ was a little out of line messing with Tolkien's world, but he did what he could. You've gotta commend the guy for that.

Hey- anyone know what the bushy thingy is? [:m:]. Oh. I see. Marijuana.
Well, it's cool looking.
Don't worry. I'm not a pothead. Too busy being a freak for that.
Ah well, cheers, I've got to go now if I don't want to be bloody murdered by the squirrels.
[i.e. my parents who want me to do more constructive things with my time, like say vandalizing a tree. That what you had in mind, eh Mum? Didn't think so. That wasn't me, though. I didn't write FRODO LIVES on a tree. Nivao didn't help me either. But for future reference- I call my parents the squirrels, a.k.a. the root of all things evil.]
Ah well, cheers. I've got to leave. NOW, says the squirell with the spatula... you know, I think I'll listen to her.

Peace, my friends, and please post. I like to connect with freaks like myself.
Not like freak is a bad thing.

And by the way- anyone catch that Bulls game last night? Gotta love the short guy. Can't believe the won.
[hint: I was there.]

Well, the reason that I couldn't type just now is that I was talking to Niudo on the phone. And we WERE NOT plotting the next occasion in which we will vandalize a tree. So stop accusing us.

Might be some spoilers. Bloody sorry.

Captain Faramir of Gondor, reporting for duty. I think I'll turn corrupted and ruin the world until you pep-talk me and Trisha* tries to take the Ring and then I'll say 'then it is forfeit buh-bye'.
SO. NOT. RIGHT.
Okay, there's a little thing called GUIDELINES. A little thing called LINES YOU DON'T CROSS. A little thing called LIMITS WHEN YOU MESS WITH THE TOLKIENESQUE WORLD.
Okay?
Okay.
Ahem, he's the YOUNGER, WISER, UNDERAPPRECIATED son. Denethor hates him 'cause he's not a blood-sucking power-hungry retard. But then, Denethor's practically mental.
See, Faramir's like good ol' Bombadil- he knows about the ring and understands it, therefore does not want it. There are some lines, PJ. Some lines that can never be crossed. Bloody hypocrite.
I mean, no one's perfect but- support me, fellow-freaks- this is a bit much. Frodo could have just stumbled into Osgiliath, he didn't have to be TAKEN there. Get it through you bloody thick skulls.
And Galadriel.
They make her out all EVIL. Love her clothes- sleeves to the knees all the way.
But see, that's the thing. Galadriel wants the ring so she can save her home. If the ring is, say, destroyed in Mt. Doom, Lothlorien, built on Nenya's power, would cease to exist. So she doesn't want to take that chance. Lorien is too perfect, too lovely. She nearly has a freaking nervy b when Frodo offers her the Ring.
And now, a word from my friend the marijuana leaf: :m:
Sorry. But I'm of the Elvish. COU*not really*GH.
I mean, if the squirrels knew about my marijuana-leaf-smilie obsession, they'd go nuts. Not as in acorns. I mean, they reacted SO negatively to the whole bloody Orlando Bloom thing...
I must go. Cheers!

*See, the Nazgul have FLYING STEEDS with out bloody names. But they've mums, haven't they? And anything with a mum has a name. So I figure that they're called Shirts. Wraiths! Wraiths on Shirts! You know.
And you can't just go HEY SHIRT because you know, something with THAT kind of fighting power isn't gonna take so lightly to being lumped into one solid group. Talk about stereotypes.
So the one that's there in Osgiliath trying to take the ring, that's Trisha. Nathan is Angmar's steed- not until the third movie SPOILER IN SILVER:[the one Eowyn takes on]. Then there's Joey, circling over the dead marshes, and in no particular order there's Jed, Jeb, Ned, and Kimmy, plus some others.

Niudo...you...oddball you....

Welcome to sciforums, the both of you, Niudo and Nivao. I can't say that I had any real questions, I just wanted to gradually peruse the universe, see its extent, etc. And I agree, Tom Bombadil should have been in the movie. There are few things cooler than a man in a yellow hat jumping around the forest singing about his wife.

As far as I can see, there's only one bad thing with Middle-earth. No pizza.
Imagine trying to order Domino's from THAT joint! It's just not happening.
And one other thing: not that I've got anything against the hobbits. I mean, Dom and Billy and Sean- they rule! And Lij ain't so bad, not really, anyway. But the ONLY REASON he got the point is cause he's so bloody short and he can roll his eyes back in his head.
Cheers!

The Witch-king of Angmar was the Lord of the Nazgul (ringwraiths). Known as the 'High Nazgul' Tolkien gives no name to the Witch-king but states that he was a king of the Easterlings at the time of the forging of the rings.
Hope this helps.

So what else do you all wanna know?

Dee Cee,

I figured that out after consulting with my fellow geeks. But thank you. Had I not known that, you would have been of great assistance.

Question:
If you could live in Middle-earth (the Undying Lands do not count), what would be your choice of home, and what would be your summer home? What species.

Although I would be an elf, I would live in Edoras, and Minas Tirith would be my summer home.

I would be an elf. Kickin' me out of the bloody Undying Lands? Valinor, I weep for you.
Definitely Lorien, or Fangorn [run into any cute elves lately?]. Mirkwood would be my summer home.
But I wouldn't stay put. If I was in Middle-earth, I'd be all over. Well, if I pass geoggers, that is. And if I was beautiful and tapped into Eowyn/Galadriel's wardrobe. Because Liv's the only one who can get away with prosthetic [spelled wrong] lips and lippy. Honestly.
Ah well, cheers.

Thank you for reconizing my- er- shall-we-say-talent. There is the whole Mrs. Evil-Neighbours thing, but we really don't have to get into that right now, do we?
Thank you for- uh- appreciating my twisted sense of humour. It's all I've got. As far as I'm concered, you complimented me. So cheers to that!

I'm glad some other people are FINALLY reading this thread. It's SO underappreciated, don't you think?

Hello everyone. I have nothing to say.
Does anyone else agree that Liv Tyler bloody sucks? Come on now, she STOOD near Aragorn. That's it.
And, and, she was totally hitting on Orlando... and while that's great and all, can I say bloody GRRR?
Thank you for obligating.

Niudo
03-14-03, 04:59 PM

03-16-03, 05:51 PM
That's right, I've bloody returned.
I really haven't much to talk about, so... I'll ask your opinion.

I've got this great book, called Master of Middle-earth, obviously about Tolkien, right? Well, a lot of it is supporting the fact that Middle-earth might've [might STILL] have existed.
I know that I'm obviously mad, but does anyone agree that it could be a possibility? That it is, technically, possible?
I know that is DOESN'T, but if you review the facts...
Anyway, check the book out sometime. The guy who wrote it was a bloody genius.

Something else. Do you think, if you were to obtain permission from Tolkien enterprises, and kind of wove a story pertaining slightly to Middle-earth, let's say the elves in particular, do you think there is a human way to convince Christopher Tolkien to publish it?

One more thing. Does anyone know anything at all about Peter Jackson?

Or how to go about contacting him?

This last bit is extremely important, seeing as I very well may be able to obtain some shall-we-say-authentically-Elvish things... ahem...

Anyhow, cheers. Thank you all for listening to me, and SOMEONE post back.

Also, try to get some of your pals to read this thread, or if you know any freaks like myself... *grin*. It's awfully underappreciated, don't you think?

Well, murderous squirrel... I'd better scram. Cheers, and bloody thanks!

So sad- the Two Towers isn't showing any more. I will be forced to obtain other means of viewing it.

Bloody hazardous, maybe, but I'm never against bending a few laws...

After all, they bloody MADE loopholes so fellows like myself [not suggesting that I'm a guy, but merely suggesting I am a human existing somewhere near this planet] could get around the law, didn't they?

Aye, that's what I thought.

Swedish Fish, sounds like a great t-shirt. I'll tell ya, the easiest way to get a copy is by downloading KaAzA or WinMX or similar web pages and dowloading it directly but I've got a copy that I would be willing to send. I can't afford to send it to a lot of people; however, a few who are interested, I may be willing to burn a copy. It comes on 2 CDs though. Good picture. Good sound. You'll have to download a Codec. It's the Academy Screener so it's DVD quality. Email me: mollyann812000@yahoo.com

Is it just me, or are storylines all around the world exactly the same?

There's four- maybe six- bloody scenarios. That's all you ever see. Some fellows spin off with something like, "Yes, I love the cinema- great plots and wicked action."

Of course, I go all sarky them- always going sarky, except for in blodge, because you honestly don't get away with bloody anything in blodge- and say something like, "Yes, it's swell, yes yes yes, never can have enough repetition, can you?"

Then my victim will get confused and I'll be compelled to apologize. Well, not really, but I don't want you all to think I'm bloody inhumane, do I? I think not.

Sometimes I'll mutter something like, "Ah, sorry bloke [well, I don't call people blokes, I think it's overrated], I love the cinema as much as anyone."

Because I do. But really...

Or sometimes, the thick-skulled fellow I'm talking with won't pick up on my sarcasm, which gives me a whole new thing to be sarky about, and it's an endless cycle.

Anyhow, my bloody point it: there are no plots left in this world- not the UK, the US, or Australia or anywhere- that haven't been over done and exploited to bloody death.

Maybe that's why we all love LOTR so much, don't you think?

Bloody cheers. I love all you fellows, you know that.

Cheers, Niudo

Is it just me, or are storylines all around the world exactly the same?

To that Quote, I say "AMEN!"

My husband went to the opening night of "Lord of the Ring: The Two Towers" and he said it was bloody fantastic. Of course, we live in a small hick-town of about 300,000 people and therefore, it couldn't have been as exciting as Hollywood, but he said that watching fans enter the theater that opening night was quite a sight. There were many fans inside the theater dressed as their favorite Lord of the Rings (LOTRs) characters. The movie-goers were cheering and completely consumed by the movie as they watched it, almost like fans in the stands at a sporting event. And I, personally, don't blame them one bit for their enthusiasm. It's an exciting story so unlike many of the templated storylines that Hollywood seems to dish out, especially in the genre of action movies. It seems that Hollywood has the trouble of dishing out the same characters: The Hero with a vengence, the damsil in distressed (sometimes replaced by a child) and an evil vision... also, give or take a comic-relief character and ya gotchaself a movie. Uh... whoo-hoo? Sometimes, I think that there is some obese man, sitting at his computer, legs propped up on the desk sitting in front of his computer and pulling switches on a database making minor adjustments to the plot, the characters, and a few details of the storyline, telling his 'advertising boys' to make this movie seem huge and finally, at the end of his day... five minutes later.... says, "All in hard days work!" What do you think?

Stoney.Hobbittess
03-21-03, 06:30 PM
That was supposed to be villian* in my earlier post, not vision.

Anyhow, it's easy for me to complain about movies... hehe. I don't have to write any. Wish that some creative pioneer would come out with a great action movie. By the way, doesn't it seem like a lot of the well-known faced-past action stars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li have similar stories too... for example, good versus a surpisingly familiar looking bad guy? oh, yeah! it's the SAME freakin' guy playing two roles. Arrg! Gimme a break!

Yeah, yeah, you can download it from KaAzA but it may take a few days since it's a big file and since so many users log on and off so frequently. I got a great copy from the program. Have fun!! :) And if you have any probs, let me know. My offer is still good.

Cheers!

I think you are one hundred percent BRILLIANT. We MUST find this man.

Oh, I am so jealous, though to hear of your outting to "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" dressed up as your favorite characters. I didn't get to make it to the premiere here. My husband did, as I stated earlier and pardon for repeating myself, but I would have loved to go. Any chance you're going to be doing the same for the final movie? Boy! I really want to be the first, between my husband and I, to see "Return of the King."

I didn't get to go to the premiere of the Two Towers either. I had a final exam  What sort of backwards institution would schedule final exams on that day? I should have complained. If they do that to me next year I think that I have every right to get the exam deferred.

Hehe, That is funny. I had heard that the J.R.R. Tolkien books were going to be re-released but the bookcovers were going to contain pictures from the movie. Is that what you were talking about or will the books, to which you referring, be based on the film which is a little different from the original, J.R.R. Tolkien books? Either way, yeah, it's silly.

Niudo
03-26-03, 06:43 PM
Could the books to which you are referring to be Bored of the Rings? Tis quite a funny tale with Frito and Spam, Arroroot Son of Arrowshirt, Leg-of-Lamb, Shlob's Lair-And Other Mountain Resorts. ;)

Yes you must be referring to that, or Lord of the Pants.

"You're Flies You Fools!" and
"I know what it is you saw, for it is also in my pants."

Otherwise, I cannot be certain what you mean by the fact that "they're making a book about it."

I loved the movie too, however, I find that number to be incredible. You may want to contact guiness, it is possible for you to have broken the world record;) I saw it four or five times over the course of several weeks. I'd love to see it in the theaters again. I remember thinking, when seeing Gandalf battling the Balrog at the beginning, how much better it looked on a huge screen. I thought to myself yes, now I am home.

UBERGEEKS!!!

There's going to be an extra curricular club at my school next year, history of middle earth or something like that, however this asshole that everyone hates is taking it so I decided not to do so. I can live without it, in spite of how interesting it sounds.

Niudo, or Nivao...christ, your names are too similar...anyhoo, you mentioned earlier in this thread or another your interest to write a story regarding the elves of middle earth (it's too far back to quote directly). While writing is always cool, I would heartily suggest creating your own universe before publishing something. Otherwise, you're just making money and prestige for somebody else. I used to write star wars fiction, that's pretty much how I started writing, but I abandoned it when I figured that out. The elves are cool, but there are more ideas to be made into realities than there are grains of sand in a desert (or Near Harad, if you like).

Nope. Because you still don't have a completely original (or mostly original) idea. Plus, it just proves that you're making money for Tolkien instead of yourself. Why not abandon Middle Earth and build your own universe from scratch, and attempt to make it better than what Tolkien did, eh?

Of course, this was before I found that little bit that they, what was it then, don't accept unsolicited publications, but whatever.

It's fun to be original and believe me we bloody are original, how many people do you know who paint FRODO LIVES on a tree, but er that's just an example we didn't actually do that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that as brilliant as you fancy yourself being, you're a bit mistaken because I do like being original and I am original, but this particular storyline was just something we were looking into, and I didn't want money I just wanted to write isn't that what we all want, well freaks like myself anyway, but thanks for your contribution and your comments will be considered. And v. possibly ignored- after all, I'm nearly getting pathetic, er I am but still. Do you know how hard it is to not have a life when you don't have the proper tools to not have a life? It's bloody hard, like trying to survive in the mountains when you don't have a mountain and all, you know?

Er well yes, that's about it, but I'm not trying to say I don't care what you think even though you're only about 15 if you don't lie, which is something I tend to do when I'm bored, I'm just saying I need something utterly pathetic like writing something about Middle-earth to do otherwise I'll be forced to have a life and who wants that?

Ah well, I think I've got heat poisoning, so don't mind me. Cheers!

It's actually somewhat of a joke. I pretend to be an asshole because it's that much fun to do so.

I just wanted to write

I'm somewhat of a writer too--and I understand. However, I just want to say that your time could have been spent better on projects that might be more lucrative in the future.

Do you know how hard it is to not have a life when you don't have the proper tools to not have a life?

Are you trying to say that you don't like having a life? I didn't have a life for most of my life, however, when I got to High School all that changed.

have a life and who wants that?

Me. I like hanging out with people. I like talking to people. And I enjoy the company of others. Yet, with all of this, I still have time to write here and in my various projects.

Ah, yes, the joys of being an incompetent fool. I love it too. But still- I like being obnoxious. Much like yourself.

And by having a life- well, I quite obviously have one, alongside friends- I have plenty- but by not having a life I mean obsessing over pointless things and living at my computer and drinking way too much Mr Pibb. And by not being some kind of weirdo- like 'Bill the Pony'- who merely thinks he has a life.

Sure, talking with people is fun, but I'd much rather make myself out to be an idiot during my study halls in random threads.

So cheers!

Niudo can come up with very unique story ideas, and carry them out for a very long time. This LOTR idea was partly my responsibility and would really have been for fun. I mean, indulging in one's fantasies (i.e. living in middle-earth) can be taken down to a somewhat sane level if you just write about it. Right?

But of course, Niudo and myself do much more that just write about Middle-Earth. But, who wants to get into that, other that me?

I've been writing since I was eight or nine...and you're a bit younger than me. I don't see the point in writing unless it is lucrative and fulfilling.

Yes, I am aware that destroying the English language to the best of my current abilities

I love the english language. Quite possibly the most beautiful, and most powerful. It's the language of the future, you know!

But study hall's nearly over so I'm gonna have to go.

I hope you don't mind my asking, but you and Nivao live in Britain, correct?

HHmm, the adventures of Tom Bombadil. I think I have a copy, probably 20 years old, very likely no longer in print. I read it something like 9 years ago and foudn it very very odd.

Which actually reminds me, does anyone have an idea where Tom Bombadil fits into the middle earth universe? I have read LOTR, The Silmarilion, and the unfinished tales that got collected into one volume, and I still am not sure wheres hes from and what hes doing there. Is he one of the Valinor? Or what?

Tolkien wrote a fair bit more than LOTR I think, but for the real obsessives of you I reccomend the stuff his son Christopher has been putting out, i think its a collection of all his fathers notes and everything else, it was at least 6 volumes last I saw, but that was a few years ago now.

Old Tom Bombadil was never explained, left as an enegma. But of course there are a million and one theories regarding him and Goldberry. Some believe he's a manifestation of Eru or just a Maia (servant of a Valar). But if you study the Books enough I'm sure you could figure it out or at least come close to the answer.

Well you know from many points that he was there before the elves awoke and went west. So either way he's immortal and pretty powerful. He has complete power over everything in his domain - "Tom's the Master" I believe Goldberry said.

I'm just reading the Complete History of Middle-earth series at the moment, interesting stuff.

I remember reading a quote from Tolkien himself who said there never would be a conclusion to the Bombadil questions because he wanted it to remain. He things a little mystery is needed in whatever you do. It was something to that effect at least. I've heard a myriad of stories...none of them quite explain everything. It is truly an enigma.

Ok, I havnt seen the two towers, but lets start there. ON teh propaganda, sorry, advertising for it, you see the Rohirrim. Who are all armoured up in authentic pretend Xena style leather etc armour, looking most like a bunch of wannabee roleplayers who have wandered out of some dark room in a university somewhere. No offense intended, (and if you do take offence, well see later.) but the overriding impression I got from Tolkein was that they were like Anglo saxons, with the authentic golden hair like Vikings. so in otherwords their armour should be more just mail ie chain mail shirts, etc. Ie the emphasis on plain and practical except for teh decorations, which shouldnt look like they have stepped out of some pasty faced role players imagination, they shoudl look, well, positively dark aged.
Basically, its like LOTR, that started much of hte whole elves and kings and dark versus light stuff, has been refracted through the lenses of its bastard children of lesser imaginations.
Then tehres the fighting, which was quite good in teh fellowship of hte ring, but speaking as someone whose recently bought a replica late medieval hand and a half sword, blunt, for practising with, it just didnt look quite like actual peopel fighting with replica stuff. Ie, like most martial arts films, it was too stylised and show offy, whereas in real life you go in, whack them and get out, do it fast, but then of course the audience cant quite see what your doing. So, if you are currently playing round with boffers of some sort, or lengths of wood, or whatever, go find authentic replica swords, swing them about, and then try fighitng with them with no target area not permitted, ie you can do thrusts, uppercuts, drawcuts, punches, etc.
Oh yes, and real archers dont draw their bow and hold it the way legolas does, neither do they do it with locked straight arms. But then i suppose hes an elf, so he can get away with it.
And if you object ot any of the above, like i said, I have a sword and I know how to use it. ;)

And so do I, actually two at a time as I do Kali (or escrima or Arnis depending on the style).

If your gonna complain about the LOTR fight scenes then you might as well complain about any film that has choreographed fight scenes.

What do the masses want to see? A scene of messy realistic fighting which is not enteratining to watch or excellent looking smooth fight scenes ala Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?

Indiana Joans did it. His fights were dirty and realistic. The moves in Crouching were cool, but Indy is cooler. Dirty realistic fights can rule, but not in a scifi/fantasy movie. It has to be an action adventure for the fights to be realistic. That way you know your not dealing with mystical forces.

DeSeRt RaT UK
05-22-03, 05:19 PM
I said the masses, didn't mean I was one of them :)

Realistic fighting in certain films has it's place like say in Fight club. Puts the point across well.

It's funny how many people you get doing martial arts cos of films like CTHD. Soon as they learn fighting aint what it is in the films, they piss of and you never see em again!

And yes Indy is cool:)

guthrie
05-22-03, 05:57 PM
Well your right about the fighting I suppose. but maybe some day someone will do a more "realistic" film.....

HHmm, ahh yes, in the first film, apart from not handling the passage of time very well, at one point frodo etc are leaving the Shire, on the way to Bree, and it clearly shows them half way up a mountainside with mountains in the background. Eh? The Shire is meant to be more rolling downland or suchlike, not blooming mountains.
And Rivendell looked far too fantasy like, instead of English home like.

Niudo
05-27-03, 04:14 PM
I'm not even going to get started on the problems with the Shire... just one little thing... they minimized it SO much. Frodo was fifty or so, for God's sake! Not a puny little blue-eyed kid!
Sigh. I'm sorry. These outbursts are to be expected from one with CCOS, as I have...

About Frodo's age.

Either way they did it they wouldn't have been able to do it properly without you complaining. At Bilbo's farewell party, Frodo is 33 (year of coming of age for a hobbit). Yet he leaves the shire 17 years later. So does PJ make him 33 or 50?

And a cut and text "17 years later" would be a little cheesy. So either way in your books they couldn't of won.

In cinematic terms the way they did it was better.

Anyway whats's CCOS?

the way the redcoats fought was very proper and gentlemanly. they stood in formation and marched and shot just the right way when commanded. it gave the gorilla-like american rebels the upperhand. this is an english mythology. i would fully expect them to fight the way they have been taught, with much flair and a sense of choreography. although, the fighting was rather dirty and confused in the battle in two towers. except for legolas. legolas can shoot his arrows effortlessly holding the bow any which way. he looks damn good the way he does it so i say poo on doing it the way an archer would.

Niudo
05-28-03, 05:56 PM
I'm all for Legolas fighting, or Legolas walking, or Legolas doing bloody anything... I suppose you're right, they couldn't have pleased me no matter what they did, but still...
Lothlorien. PJ, although trying his best, messed that up SO bad... I mean, the Harvard Lampoon did nearly as good of a job in Bored of the Rings, and at least that was funny! All it takes is three trees, some white Christmas life, and a few bigatures, and you're there... I mean, I all but recreated PJ's Lothlorien using my "flet" (loft bed), fake vines, Christmas lights, and other LOTR tidbits here and there... sigh.
About CCOS. It's Carefully Chosen Obsesison Syndrome. There's an entire thread dedicated to it in Free Thoughts under 'Do You Have CCOS?' so I really won't go into detail here when all you skeptics could honestly go look it up if you really care. Plus I don't want to be accused of derailing a thread that I helped adopt and derail tastefully into what it is today.
I think Peter Jackson did great, given what he had, but the whole Tom Bombadil/Evil Faramir thing REALLY makes me mad. But then, so does Liv Tyler (or should I say Weaving? MOTHER OF HAROLD! AND BILL! Er... don't ask... I'd tell you but you honestly don't want to know...).
So I guess just because I'm a Tolkien fanatic (Tolkien, among other things, mainly scifi) doesn't give me the right to complain about the hell of a job PJ did. I don't think I could have done better. But we'll see about that once I start filming MY parody...
