While this might come across as an advertisement (which it technically isn't), I have found that www.portableapps.com covers a whole number of small programs that can be loaded onto a USB stick. From password storage, graphics programs, email programs, spyware detection and removal etc.

This of course brings me to the question of what essential programs would you or do you have on your USB thumbstick? (if of course you have one)

I know I probably should look for Kernel Debuggers & Hex Editors, as well as of course the small linux versions you can actually run from sticks. Perhaps some emulators.

I have Slax on a usb disk for when I have to use someone elses computer. Wont touch "easily-to-infect" Microsoft windows with a barge poll.

Im full on linux, and slax is great!

w1z4rd already mentioned Slax, which is something of a distro non-targeted at a market, though is the root of most relevant and useful live cd tools.

    Of course---
    BackTrack for security.
    F.I.R.E for data recoverty.

Those are probably somewhat standard oldies but goodies.
