I'm actually very angry right now :L I bought two USB hubs

    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-High-Speed-7-Port-Mobile-F5U701-BLK/dp/B000SDZ0K4/
    http://www.amazon.com/Macally-Mini-7-Port-Adapter-TriHub7/dp/B001DBF07S

So the Belkin would randomly disconnect my external usb hard drives which were self powered, it only did this if I moved it! Any slight touch or movement and bam it disconnected everything LOL I read reviewed saying this happened to others and figured it was the damn hub, then I got a new one thankfully on sale and it worked for a few months but just yesterday after being used for a 24 hour conversion of some things I moved it and bam it disconnected 1 of the usb hard drives then reconnected it. I was like "oh no" I cannot believe the hubs are this unstable it makes no damn sense. I know it's the hub because I moved it and boom disconnect. I tried reproducing it and couldn't..... I am seriously not happy at the thought of re-purchasing a new hub only to have something else happen like this.

Do you have any suggestions for a high quality USB hub that doesn't go screwy after a few months jeeez!

Could it be the operating system? A friend uses a cheap one and had it for years, no problems.

No I use Ubuntu and Windows 7. It was basically acting up because I was doing a 24 hour conversion of some files and I moved it around my desk once, immediately disconnected it did :L The other one was such an annoying piece of junk if I tilted it upward all devices disconnected! That was the belkin garbage. There is no excuse for that because the usb hard drives are self powered the hub didn't even have that much work to do jeez! Anyways I am keeping the hub but since the previous one acted this way and now this one is after months I am guessing it's just the hubs suck. I"ll keep an eye out to see if it happens without the hub but it never did :/ and it only happened when I would move the hubs soooooooo :Z I am abandoning the idea of a hub it's just not gonna work for me :L I'll get a new pc someday :Z

Could be not enough power getting to the usb device. I doubt Linux gives a warning if that were the case.

sounds like the USB connectors are faulty, or dirty.
when you have pulses measured in nanoseconds a disconnect of a microsecond will crash the drive. game pads wouldn't even notice it.
this is one of the major problems with external storage and it applies to all types.
if you have replaced or installed a video card you will notice it just doesn't "slip in", you have to press down on it pretty hard to get it to seat. the same applies to almost all of the connections in a computer.
the only exception i'm aware of is the ZIF socket for CPUs. even this has a locking lever that pinches the pins.

Before you buy anything, go on amazon and read the reviews. Sort reviews from low to high and focus on the one and two star ones. You should be able to spot the relevant reviews from the ones where people whine about stupid shit.
