    This is the hitch.

But they were under pressure, and the other delegates were openly dismissive of their stand

So is good to see the US showing some flexibility for a change.

Why not? All the people who do research in America come from all over the world.

Great news, fantastic reaction from the U.S.
Global consciosness is changing and the U.S has a chance to lead from the front.
Will it hold?... Yes, the political rhetoric can help to facilitate attitudinal changes.
    Start at home folks.
We've heard way too much of the " but China and India.. are running away.. we can't stop them..." crap. it's time to change where and what you can and have just a smidgeon of faith that others will follow/be obliged to follow.
Many local communities are making real progress in renewable energy, maybe whole nations can too.
The deforestation issue is massive. Parts of Asia and Indonesia are being decimated and an immediate halt is imperative.

Yeah, You know, China and India might cave in to international pressure the same way the US did.

Except for all the Americans doing research who already are here.

Except for all the other people not in America who're doing research, too.

Ah, that's right. They all have to come here because here is where stuff actually gets done.

Which is why we do most of what gets done.

And why most of you folks have to come here, hoping that some of it rubs off on you.

    For naught, mostly.

    Sorry.

    Not really.

The rest of the world is what it is because it hasn't figured out how to be like, let alone be better, than the US. And it's had far more time across history to accomplish the "Better than America" superiority-thingy.

    You whine. We laugh.

Europe is resurging, with the new (but difficult) birth of russia, and the increased economic ties between all the countries... They're gonna be competing against china and Asia soon, If they aren't already.
