The US is importing Chinese cars at a time when unemployment is on the increase. I understand Michigan is particularly badly hit.

Do people who buy these cars because they are cheap have any regard for the unemployed and the further unemployment they will create ? Do they realize that their jobs may be on the line in the near future when what they produce will be cheaper to import ?

Does it make any sense to talk of moral obligations in the same breath as dollars and cents ?

Let's see, the business that buys the cars is in America which means it will pay an import tax. Then the business will have to transport the car by American train or truck, put it on a lot that is in America that was owned by Americans and they pay local state and Federal taxes as well. They employ people at their business which advertise their cars , sell their cars and work on their cars. When the car is sold a profit is made that stays mostly in America except for the cost of the car they bought from China. So there's a huge mark up in those cars that they sell and that's what businesses are all about. Where a car is made means little to those selling that car, they only see the end result, money in their pockets, damned if its American manufactured or not, good Americans huh?

I should, perhaps, clarify what I mean by moral obligations. I'm talking about obligation to society
