"It was reported this week that the United States will be facing its largest budget deficit in history. As of yesterday at 4:20 p.m., the national debt is $7,623,773,382,285.24."

Also, I just came across a news briefing that came from President Clintons era:

"Today, President Clinton will announce that The United States is on course to eliminate its public debt within the next decade."

And you guys wonder why I have a problem with Bush's economy.

I've been hearing dire predictions about the US economy since about 1956 or so ...ain't none of 'em come true and look where we've come since then.

And lest ye forget, at many, many times in US history, people have been saying ...the United States will be facing its largest budget deficit in history. And, hey, at each of those times, it's been true! ....and what's happened?

Yeah, we've gone from a surplus to a 7 TRILLION dollar deficit of in a matter of years.

We have overcome it, yes you are right. Hey, I guess that means I should be THANKING Bush, you know, because in the long run, we'll overcome it and be better for it, right? Oh wow, Bush is soooo brilliant. I bow down to him...

I wonder what the deficit was in 1957 or so ...IN TODAY'S DOLLARS? But even so, only the number changed ...everything else, including the scare and fear tactics, has remained virtually the same.

Right! That's precisely what will happen .....and in 40 years or so, you, too, can join a silly Internet forum and answer very similar accusations from the young whipper-snappers of the youth generation ....when ye're old and have seen it all, just like me! Ooooooh, you've got something to look forward to, huh? ...LOL!

    Won't come close...

Did you see the part where we are continually slipping farther and farther into debt? When are we going to stop? And just because you believe it will get better, does that mean you don't think we should hold responsible those who are the cause of this?

That's exactly what they were saying in the 1950s! See what I mean? The more things change, the more they remain the same. All of what you're thinking/wondering/complaining about is exactly the same ...maybe even word for word, for god's sake!

Well, if it's gonna' get better, then why worry about it at all? And what are we holding people responsible FOR? ...if it's gonna' get better? Hold them responsible for making thinngs better????

What ye're not understanding is that this very thing, this very topic was discussed with horror and dire predictions before ......don't you think that it's somewhat like "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"?? It sure is from my perspective ....'cause I've heard it all before ...many times.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!! Run for ye're lives! The sky is falling!

Look at the companies that were once owned by Americans and are now operated and owned by foriegn countries. If you don't see the writing on the wall then I can't help you.

Who will buy Uocal? The Chinese CNOOC is bidding against Chevron for Unocal.
The Chinese Haier group will be buying Maytag.

First our corporations hire Chinese corporations to manufacture products to be sold to Americans under American brand names. Then Chinese Corporations buy the American brand names. But so what, there is nothing wrong with the American economy as long as we have some assets left to sell in exchange the chinese made things on Walmart's shelves. Kind of reminds me of the thinking of junkies.

In order for them to beat us, they will have to become exactly like us. In a sense, we still win even in that eventuality.

Also please note that the only reason China seems to be doing so well is because their government is propping them up with every sneaky trick in the book. Ones even the US finds dubious.

Well, anyway, back to the actual topic of dicussion. Am I the only that has a problem with the fact that we went from a surplus to a 7 trillion dollar deficit in one presidents terms?

And to address Max again, although I know I'll regret it, you think that we shouldn't care about the national debt because it will get better. Well it doesn't get better, it's made better. I personally find it unacceptable that George W is letting the debt spiral out of control and is continuing to make the debt worse with tax cuts and his other moronic economic reforms.

Well, good for you. Maybe someday, if you're good, you too will be permitted to vote for the politicians of your choice. Until then, get a job, earn some money on your own and learn how the world really works.

Well, when we are talking online, talk is cheap, but I do have a job, and I earn enough to be spending the amount of time writing on this forum. Speaking of, this is not a place for personal attacks, we are here to discuss politics, not to discuss the character's of our members. If you have something intelligent or interesting to say about the topic, such as how you think we can fix the national debt, I'm dying to here it.

Well, why do you think that you're so worried about it? Especially when people far more knowledgeable in world economics don't seem to be nearly as concerned as you?

Why isn't the stock market crashing because people are worried sick about it?

Why isn't the news blaring day and night about it if it's such a horrid thing?

Why isn't the newspapers full of articles about it?

Why does it seem that you're the only one who cares?

How is it that you're the only one who seems to understand the dire situation while everyone else seems to be going along fat, dumb and happy?

What are your credentials in world economics? How long have you studied economics, world economics?

Hey buddy, I hate to break it to you but you are VERY confused.

We had a BUDGET surplus. Not a surplus on the National Debt. BIG DIFFERENCE.
We did not go from a surplus to 7 TRILLION dollar debt in 6 years. Please relook at what you are talking about.
The BUDGET is the national federal budget. Some years we dont borrow money, some we do. This is the BUDGET.
The National deficit is the total amount owed by of the federal government over the lifetime of the country.
Now the federal budget does affect the national deficit- ie in a surplus year would could start paying it back. But we dont. We take the surplus and spend it. Be it on the Military or Social Programs, we spend it. Did you see Clinton pay any of it back with his Glorious Surplus?? NOPE.
